Yes, we will probably add avatars as well as some other functionality related to community building. It's probably at least month or two away, however, as we're working on some other issues that are taking precedence at the moment.

I for one am a big fan of avatars, often I get mixed up with who is who on this site because I cannot remember names in real life or the Internet! An avatar is useful to those of us who remember faces better than names. I can't wait to see what you guys have in store for this site!

Most changes of this sort are automatically retroactive. For example, as your post count goes up it goes up on every post you've ever made. If you change your title or your sigline then it changes on all your posts, all the way back to the beginning. So, I believe that you could post an avatar, use it for a few days and then if you decide to change it the new avatar will replace the old one on all your previous posts. As we know, avatars are used on many boards. Perhaps add a reputation' meter that goes up with votes from other registered users... .. oh and an emergency switch to turn off the internet if enough people use the encrypted key
