United States Attacked - Let's All Do Our Part

To all my fellow US citizens,

Like I'm sure all of you, I watched the tragedies in New York City and Washington D.C. with a sense of helpless rage. But, anger never solved anything, so I've been thinking of something to do to help.

The nation's blood supply was low even before yesterday's tragedies, and it's now probably critical. Let's all contact our local Red Cross and donate blood ASAP. I really *HATE* needles, but I'm going to donate as soon as I can. We need to do anything we can for the people of NYC and WDC.

God bless all those affected by this incomprehensible catastrophe....

Although I have a rare blood type, the Red Cross has told me they can't use me as a donor because of various medication allergies. May I suggest as an alternative a cash donation to the Red Cross via the Amazon.com site? It's currently listed on their main page. They've collected pledges of over $500,000 in only 24 hours and have waived all fees that would normally be associated with the transactions so all collected monies will go to the relief fund.

 

Excellent idea Nicole, I plan on doing both.

I'm in the same boat as Nicole when it comes to donating blood, so I do appreciate her mentioning the Amazon.com link; and I second Bruce, that we should extend our prayers and support to those affected by this.

Yes Gus, that is a very moving tribute of the world's compassion towards the United States.

However, as the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. I just saw that NATO members Germany, Norway, and Italy (with more to follow I'm sure) have refused to assist in military action against the terrorists who recently slaughtered over 5000 US civilians.

That is in spite of the fact that the United States has invoked Article 5 of the NATO charter, which states that an attack on one member nation is an attack on all member nations, and all member nations are required to lend full assistance (including military aid) to the attacked member nation, in this case the United States.

Apparently, a lot of NATO members have decided that, for them, NATO only exists to provide them with protection, courtesy of the toughest kid on the block (United States), and they feel no compulsion to return the favor.

IMHO, the United States should immediately withdraw from NATO, and sign mutual-defense agreements with those countries (such as, but not limited to, the United Kingdom) who have proven themselves true friends of the United States.

There is no point whatsoever in the United States being a member of NATO (and paying billions in dues) if the other member nations will not assist us in our time of need, as is happening now.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm just damn sick of my country playing Santa Claus to the rest of the world, and then getting crapped-on and attacked in return.

I am sorry, Ultrich, but I am with Bruce 100% in respect to NATO.

According to your assesment, NATO members who are strong supporters of US anti-terrorist policy are Belgium, Canada, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Then, this leaves the rest of NATO as week supporters or even "neutral", and this represents Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and Turkey. By a simple mathematical calculation, this means that only 27.77_ % of NATO members are strong supporters of US anti-terrorist policy. This is a far cry from saying that NATO members are backing us up.

The other countries that you mentioned are not relevant to NATO because they are not members of it.

I'd like to retract (but not apoligize for) some of my comments regarding NATO. Since my original post, France, Germany, and Italy have all done a 180 degree about-face and come out in 100% support of the United States in the war on terrorism, including military assitance. All 3 countries have insisted that they will honor their NATO commitments.

The reason I will not apoligize is because my original post was correct, many NATO countries initially refused to assist the US as required by the NATO charter, but they have since come around. Some other NATO countries have either held fast in their refusal or stayed silent. These countries should be booted from NATO ASAP, IMO.

I would like to thank the citizens of all those countries who have chosen to stand with the United States in this darkest hour of our history.

I did not contradict Bruce with regard to NATO.

Bruce mentioned Italy among the members of the NATO that have refused to assist in military action against the terrorists who recently slaughtered over 5000 US civilians.

I am Italian and Bruce's assertion concerning Italy is false.That's why I corrected Bruce.
I did not comment on the fact that some NATO members have refused to give the US military assistance.

I gave two PARTIAL lists;a list of countries that are strong supporters(among them Italy) and another of countries that are partial supporters.I wrote COUNTRIES and not NATO MEMBERS.I know that Australia,India,Israel,Kuweit,Russia,Pakistan,Saudi Arabia are not members of the NATO.I am not completely idiot.At least I believe I am not.

You are right, but I still believe that the majority of NATO members are not supporters of US anti-terrorist policy. I am not backing up this assumption right now, but if you want me to, I can try to. I was reading some references about this.
