Can you please stick to one outline of how things are to be done. I am sick and tired of trying to guess exactly how each instructor wants something done. Follow the guideline given by the school if you have to so that there is some uniformity to same assignments but different classes.

While I understand that each instructor might want things a little different, if that is the case please make it clear in your instructions for a given assignment and not provide these instructions in your feedback when we can't go back and redo the assignment to your liking.

    Thank you,

    Student who is fed up

    Bizarre post...:(
Do you care to elaborate and provide some specific examples in order for us "instructors" to provide you with an answer, or are you just trolling.

I feel you girl...I like when you do what’s on the syllabus and when you get your paper back they have taken points off for not doing it a different way. When you point out that you followed the instructions you get no response.

In the sociology class I'm in my instructor has the most vague assignment for the final, which is in essay format. It says, "Write a definition of the new old, the length is up to you but it must be well written." That’s all it says. That seemed a little vague, so I shoot an email off asking for some clarification. I asked her, is this my personal feelings or a research paper? Is this my point of view or societies? The response I got was, "use the web and figure it out." WTF?

I take it that some things are not going well? Sometimes you need to adapt in order to get along. At Ashford University, they use APA style for all written assignments. No problem as you learn it and get used to it. Suddenly, after using the same style in 15 classes, my Managerial Economics instructor started 'nickel and diming' everyone in the class for not following APA requirements. Instead of fighting an obvious losing battle, I simply asked for guidance on what is considered acceptable (at least in his mind). Once I saw his examples of what he perceived to be correct formatting, all of the minimal deductions disappeared for the remainder of the class. Sometimes, different people perceive the same requirements in different ways. It happens.

:) No trolling! I am just fed up with following directions and getting points taken off for not reading their mind or having them change the rules 2 week before a paper that I have been working on for 3 weeks is due, example: I had one instructor never state our sources had to be current within 4 years yet this was not stated until 2 weeks before the paper was due.

Seriously? I think I would call that one up and ask what the heck and bring that to the attention of the Dean.

Are you not attending Clovis anymore?

Nope things are not going well simply because I am sick of having to guess what instructors want and I'm sick of unclear directions. If you want something a specific way is it really that hard to just write it out?

This is exactly my problem. If instructors are following APA format then there should be no different interpretations because the instructions and how to are clearly stated in the manual. I have had the exact thing as you happen in quite a few classes and it drives me NUTS! APA doesn't in my opinion leave things to where they can be interpreted different by 2 people. It is clearly written and gives you examples for just about anything you can think of. SO WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?

Oh and for the record I am WELL AWARE that this is the way things are and I will have to deal with it, doesn't mean I can't vent about it though :)

Short answer: because they can. You are definitely correct that APA leaves no interpretation. Unfortunately, the person you are having the difference with is the one who will decide your ultimate grade. It would be better to go with the flow and make sure that you never encounter this instructor in any future classes. For now, VENT AWAY!!

It makes perfect sense, where is your confusion? It sounds like an interesting topic, in fact, I kind of want to do this assignment for you...
