A couple weeks ago, I had a thread titled "Good News?" unfortunately, that effort was only temporarily effective before it failed. The latest one does look more promising and, although I know the world is full of tragic stories, this is the one I have been keeping the closest eye on. I'm not ashamed to say that seeing the headlines puts me in tears, I really can't stand this and hope that this newest effort works. PLEASE, for the love of life on earth, can this disaster just END???? :'( BBC News - BP reaches key 'milestone' in halting Gulf oil leak
I hope so too bud. I'm not only reading about it but also living it. Let me tell you that it royally sucks. :Keeping my fingers crossed:
It seems that the news gets worse, not better. My fear is that we'll eventually learn that the REAL truth was withheld or unrealized and that things are worse than anyone guessed. I'm out here in land-locked New England wishing the best for everyone in the gulf and those along the loop current.
This makes me ill...my grandfather was a shrimper. He dropped out of school in the 5th grade to go to work on the boats. While many Louisianians knew this COULD happen the reality is everyone thinks it won't in their lifetime. I'm afraid the damage is done Kizmet even if they get the well shut down. Current estimates are that this latest attempt is increasingly successful so far. Right now, about 15k barrels are being captured a day. Not close to the spill's entire output, but getting better each day. BP has made a few statements that claim their relief well plan (set to be finished in August) is a "guaranteed" permanent fix. Well, I guess all we can do is hope... hope that the current stop-gap is good enough to prevent further damage when it is fully functioning and hope that the relief wells work as planned and hope that no hurricane messes up the effort, forcing them to start all over again.
This whole thing makes me ill. I feel so very bad for the folks who live on the gulf, especially the shrimpers/fishermen who work so hard anyway. Two questions that have come to my mind: 1. Are we not all [somewhat] responsible for spill, thanks to our incredible national appetite for oil? and, 2. How might this oil spill compare to the 100's of ships sunk during WWII, and all the oil they left floating on the seas?
whether you like Rachel Maddow or not, this is a very interesting video Rachel Maddow- The more spills change_ the more they stay the same YouTube - Rachel Maddow- The more spills change_ the more they stay the same
