I was talking to some other managers at a meeting and we discussed personal development to improve business knowledge and make one more valuable/marketable. I mentioned that I could benefit from an accounting and finance class for my current role. Other talked about marketing and others about HR. It led me to think – if you could take/recommend a class(es) for a you or a coworker to take, what would it be and why? I voted for project mgmt because it seems to be widely applicable in my field. My next choice would probably be six sigma. If I wanted to move beyond that I'd probably begin picking up some IT/CS certs.
E. The answer cannot be determined from the information given. I say that because any of those might be useful, but which one of those would definitely be best depends on the role the person has now and the role they want to play in the future. -=Steve=-
I chose both "Management" and "Change Management". But if you're talking about just one class, well... I wound up getting a Business minor with my CS degree (Bachelor's). For the last class of the minor, I planned on taking the Project Management class. But it wound up needing a prerequisite class that wasn't part of the minor requirements. So I compiled a list of classes I could take right away and showed the list to three MBAs that I work with, separately. Every single one of them said the same thing: Organizational Behavior. OB encompasses management and change management. But also "managing up," working on teams, motivating employees, office politics & power structures... you name it. Fascinating stuff, and quite useful too. JJ
Lean Sustainable development I vote for none of the above. The current "BIG" thingys are "Sustainable development" and/or "Lean", either one by it self or especialy added to the above list. That's why I am waiting for "Lean Sustainable Development" to come out.
I would take a class in something like Space Mission and Launch Operations or Space Habitation and Life Support Systems. What can I say? Nothing on your list looked appealing to me.
Hi, Randall. Let me throw a bit of a curve ball at you. I would suggest learning a language. I say that because, for one thing, you did say personal development, and secondly, because the value of learning another language, no matter what profession you are in, is undeniable. Add that to the fact that learning a language is FUN and FREE (or nearly free, as materials are easy to obtain), to me it is a no-brainer.
