"Produced in part at Humboldt State University"

... and this is what happens when people who are permanently stoned make a film :)

OK, Abner, I gotta know. This video isn't exactly going viral. I was the 59th viewer, and I'll bet half of those are from your posting. So how (and why) did you come to find it? Are you researching the film program at Humboldt State? Is that your long lost nephew? You have some randomizer on your YouTube?

    I... don't get it.

It looked like a public service announcement, but then it ended with no message.

Is this one of those there artsy edgy introspective-ish thingies?

I'm trying, I was number 60, but I don't know if I get it...did the other 59 people get it?

So, this man won't have to deal with the hassles of society because he has checked out- that I get, but is there more to the message?

    I stand by my explanation...

Made by a bunch of stoners, while stoned, who were Absolutely Certain they were making an Incredibly Profound Statement.

Abner: "I will unravel the mystery in a day or two!"

John: Yeah, there's a delay because he's probably sitting there watching Andy Warhol's "Empire".

(You can watch the first six minutes of the 8-hour+ "Empire" on YouTube, here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7idi_5IaMrk
The remaining 479 minutes are precisely the same.

The answer lies somewhere in between. I know one of the guys who made this short film. He suffers from (Major Depressive Disorder):

In the words of Cookderosa: "So, this man won't have to deal with the hassles of society because he has checked out- that I get, but is there more to the message?"

Yes, there is more to this message. "This man" is a veritable ghost on this earth due to his human condition, and the way he perceives things due to being afflicted by MDD. He is physically present in the world, yet he is invisible, looking at life from outside the glass.

Dr. Bear, I do have an interest in short films. One of these days I would like to study it formally. When one is afflicted by MDD, the world is pretty much a black and white movie. I have personal experience with this as well. However, there is hope. The modern depression drugs of today are great, and can help someone lead a normal life. Some of the greatest men in history, including Abraham Lincoln, have had MDD.

    Good day!

John: Me, too. I happen to be very fond of the short films that Peter Sellers made (with others: Spike Milligan, Richard Lester) in the 50s and 60s. There were quite a few, from 9 to 30 minutes long, and wonderfully surreal and clever, I thought. "The Running Jumping and Standing Still Film" packs a huge amount of visual and verbal cleverness into 9 minutes. "The Mukkinese Battle Horn" (30 minutes) has Sellers in a police inspector role much funnier, I think, than his later Clouzot. That one is available free on the estimable Veoh site (http://tinyurl.com/MukkineseBattleHorn).

Thanks for that film!!!!!!!! Loved it. One of my friends told me there is a place in Hollywood that plays nothing but black and white films. The theater still has original red carpet, chandeliers, etc. They play Bella Lugosi type movies, and they only charge $1.00!!! Maybe I will stop off at Phillipe's for a French dip on my way.

I need to go check that out!

Is there a place to search for short films? IMDB doesn't always list them, and I've tried searching using the usual search terms, but nada.

I'm looking for a short starring Hope Davis. All I know is that at the end, she blows up a bomb (as an unsuspected terrorist?).

    Any hope?

    Would that be "The Imposters?"
Features Hope Davis and a bomb on a ship.

No, I'm aware of that one. But the one I saw (on the Independent Film Channel) was definitely a short. She was walking along a street and dropped a bomb to blow someone up.

Yeah, I know what you mean. For years, I have been searching for a short film from the UK titled "The Beast". It is about scientists who devise an apparatus that give chimps the ability to speak like humans. Then from what I remember, these scientist were in court for animal cruelty/experimentation. The judge asked the scientist "Do these beasts feel pain?" The scientist said "Oh of course not!!!!!". Then while on the court bench, the scientist hooked up the speaking device to the chimp, then asked him "How do the experiments feel?" The chimp than said clear as day, "It hurts". It was one of the most profound moments in film I could recall. It would certainly make any grown man with a heart cry.

Try as I may, I just cannot find it. All these years later, it still festers in my mind.
