Not necessarily related to distance learning, but very interesting especially in light of increased tuition rates here in Texas.

"The number of illegal immigrant college students paying in-state tuition and receiving financial aid at Texas' public colleges and universities continues to climb, according to state higher education records.

During the fall semester, 12,138 students – about 1 percent of all Texas college students – benefited from the state law granting in-state tuition, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Most of the immigrants among those students are illegal, and some others are not legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens.

Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008."

I'm curious how many of these students were brought here as kids and essentially don't know another life than one in the U.S. I mean, what would you do with them? They're not criminals, and there's nothing to gain from consigning them to a lifetime of second class status.

I'm not sure what to do with them either. It's a very difficult situation.

In California one has to have a social security number to go to a public college. There's been lots of stories about high school graduates suddenly finding out they were illegal aliens after applying for college - one infamous case a 18 year old, adopted as a very young age, who did not speak spanish was sent back to Mexico.

Oh, I didn't say I didn't know what I'd do with them, I was just curious what you thought since you posted the article. If it were up to me I'd hand them a green card and be done with it. They're already acculturated, and especially with the kids who want to go to college, how bad an idea could it possibly be to keep them around? Besides, if we can't err on the side of liberty with kids like that, then it's time to give up that "land of the free" nickname altogether.
