As a teacher wannabe I find this discouraging

We have teachers who don't care, are emotionally belittling and scarring our children, but they have tenure and can't be let go.

New excited, dedicated teachers just out of school can't find or keep jobs because of budget cutbacks.

Alternate route teachers who may have real world experience they could share with students are having requirements raised and are being discouraged from even attempting to acheive certification.

This is a sad commentary on the state of education.

Don't forget, there are also wonderful teachers still around too. While I can't fathom what would prompt a teacher to write "Loser" on a kid's assignments, I could believe things like that happen. You said that these teachers have tenure, and that may be true, but do you know who they get tenure from? Ignorant administrators.

We also have really good teachers, like you said, being denied tenure. A colleague of mine was recently denied a contract for next year, and thus was denied tenure. A few others in our division experienced the same. Why? We're in a budget cut year, and rather than saying "Sorry, we have to cut staff," the administration is getting rid of non-tenured people because it's easier.

So much for the kids. Then again, most administrators are so far removed from the classroom, they have no clue what teachers are experiencing now.

FYI, tenure does not mean that you can never get rid of a teacher; it merely means that the teacher has a right to a hearing before being gotten rid of.
