This is where the teacher in me really gets ticked. Government officials just cannot get it through their thick skulls that schools and the teachers who work there are not miracle workers. Sure, if every public school was a boarding school and we got to control the kids all day long and provide them with the necessary amounts of food, love, and support, we wouldn't have the problems we do. But in reality, public schools are not boarding schools. Our students go home to families that cannot provide food for them, do not provide love and support for them, and the kids often have to raise themselves.

I just found out that there is a 12 year old pregnant in our middle school. When I was talking about the kid with our librarian, I found out who the kid's mother was. The mother was only 14 when she got pregnant the first time, and she had another kid by the time she was out of high school. (She dropped out.) How are these kids ever going to have the support needed to be successful? When this 12 year old is a junior in high school, her child would be in kindergarten. Could you imagine, as a teacher, holding a parent conference with a high school junior? High school juniors have parent conferences about them! I wonder how the 29 year old grandmother is going to feel being a "grandmother"...

And thus ends my rant on the education system :)
