I'm sorry, but... I don't agree with the part about accounting, at all. You can do bookkeeping without a degree all you want. But accounting is way more than just bookkeeping, otherwise CPAs wouldn't need to get that handy-dandy cerification to put the C in CPA. (Hell, they're lucky that they don't need to go to law schools to become tax lawyers to be able to do accounting.)

I have a two-year focused technical school degree in accounting and have kept my skills up to date as the technology improved. I can tell you honestly unless your looking at specialized high end areas of the profession a bachelors degree or higher is not needed. Your rank and file accountant/bookkeeper can do most of the day to day business related work just fine with a solid two year degree. And I could make a case for a High School graduate if they had eight semesters of accounting can get into the profession.

Add to this I'm not four year school material I just am getting by in my major now with a low to middling c average ,if that, and am only getting it because the company is demanding one for advancement. Its odd my twenty plus yearsofwork experience and the training I've had don't matter. Sad really.

I do think like myself to many people are being forced into four year degree programs and the system ,including K-12, is to focused on college while ignoring trade education in High School where it should be.

I go to the tech school websites when I'm dreaming about changing careers. Georgia has a large 2-year tech school system, where you can take a short course or AAS and get on with your life for very cheap. I can't see anything wrong with a bachelor's or master's degree holder going to tech school to get a marketable license and skill. You can get your education at the university and your training at tech school. Higher education is wonderful, but everyone needs to stop thinking of the liberal arts as job training. Maybe the college kids could take votech courses in the summer...what's wrong with a philosopher knowing how to wire your house too?
