    Hi everyone,

Just a reminder. With the holidays approaching, some of you may be thinking of buying a pet as a gift for yourself, or someone else. There are many great animals at your local rescues or pounds availabe for adoption. Many carry specific breeds, and can vary from pups to senior citizens. Some places carry cats, dogs, pigs, goats, reptiles, chickens, swans, etc. So before you buy a pet from the local pet store or breeder, please consider adoption. I personally like to adopt dogs around the age of 1-2 because they are usually already house trained, and they are past that super active pup stage. But to each his own.

    Thanks for your time,

    Abner

Excellent advice. I got my dog Tucker (my moniker in honor of my pooch) at the local pound 11 years ago. He's 13 now and too old to go hunting anymore but he's been a great dog. A golden retriever/labrador mix, about 105 lbs. He always asks to go outside when needed and we skipped much of the annoying puppy stage. The vet couldn't believe that such a great dog would be found at the shelter. If I need another dog I'll go to the pound. I see beautiful dogs for adoption every week in the local paper.

I can remember reading an article a long time ago about how many rabbits would have to be euthanized after some careless parent bought their children one for Easter.

I believe something like this may have happened when the live action 101 Dalmations movie came out a few years ago.

Pets certainly are a lot of work, but are very rewarding. I agree, take some care in animal adoption.

Someone can find anything from a mutt, to a rare breed. I agree about the adult dog thing. So far, all the adult dogs I have adopted are housebroken, or a very easy to housetrain. Once in a while, a dog may be caged for so long he forgets his housebreaking habits, but I can usually retrain them in a loving way within a day or two. I also find adults are very easy to train not to chew certain things in the house!

John: Not always. We just had a house guest who devoured the entire chicken we were going to serve for New Year's eve dinner.

This wouldn't cause me too much concern unless by serving you meant that you were going to hit the chicken with a tennis racket or perhaps catering to the chicken's needs.

Ay doc! You and Bill H bust me up! I just spit out some coffee while laughing. Some of the coffee hit my French bulldog (sitting by me) who then became very angry and barked at me for about ten minutes! I thought he was going to take out a tiny glove and start slapping me about the face. I am awake now!

P.S. this reminds of another time many years ago involving a post the Tedmeister made. I was drinking a cerveza while reading his humorous post, and one of my Akitas got sprayed with beer. After that, she started sitting behind my office chair instead of next to it!
