I have two sons attending Southern Nazarene University. Before starting SNU, both of them took the Western Civ CLEP. Both passed with flying colors. Both sent the CLEP transcript to SNU. Here is where it get's weird. My youngest son was given credit for the CLEP. His univisor now says he's met the requirement for that class. But, my oldest son's univisor say he still needs the class. He talked to the assistant registrar, reminding her that he has taken the CLEP for this subject and she informed him that SNU doesn't offer credit for the Western Civ CLEP. He tried to talk to the registrar but couldn't get past the assistant. He then emailed the registrar to explain that he taken the Western Civ CLEP and he was told us that SNU does not offer credit for that CLEP. Then I decided to get involved by emailing the registrar. I explained that the CLEP policy is on the SNU website, that according to that, SNU does take the Western Civ CLEP. I also pointed out that both my sons had submitted the CLEP transcripts at the same time and that one had been given credit for the CLEP while the other one was told he still needs to take the class. His advisor (not to be confused with univisor) is telling him he doesn't need the class, the registrars office is saying he does. I'm still waiting to hear back on this. In the mean time, my oldest is supposed to be enrolled for his last semester. He went ahead and enrolled in the last four classes he thinks he needs but is at a loss of what to do about the Western Civ class. This nonsense of we'll give one student credit for the CLEP but refuse to give credit to another student floors me. Especially considering the two students are brothers who are aware of each others academic information. I don't know what they they thinking up there at SNU.
If this person doesn't get their act together, contact the school President. That usually takes care of things. Good luck, Abner
Welcome to the university/school bureaucracy. I would suggest looking at the official university calendar as it should provide the info on the requirements and maybe your son can take it with him to a meeting. An e-mail or a visit to the Dean's office might be another option. Hope it goes well.
I agree with Randell. They need to know right away and it will be resolved to your liking much quicker.
Agreed. I had a problem with one deadbeat instructor at a previous school. After several attempts to resolve the issue with the instructor failed, I wrote a polite e-mail to the college president. I was amazed at how fast the issue was resolved. The dean of student affairs even contacted me and apologized profusely for the problem.
We gradually worked our way up the chain. I received an apologetic letter from the Provost, reassuring me she would handle the situation herself, that he did NOT need to take the class and that he will graduate in May. I also received an apologetic email from the president. We thought it was solved. A few days go by and his univisor still says he has to take the class. I contact the registrar's office again. They ignore me the first two times I contact them. The third time I get a BS reply about his records being accurate. I contact them again, they ignore me again. My son then go's to the registar's office. They insist he needs the class. He go's to his advisor who checks into it and then tells him he can request to waive the class or take it. That's after repeatedly telling him he didn't need it. It looks like we are starting over on the whole mess. Thank goodness I saved all the emails.
