"California Becomes 50th State to License Professional Counselors"

Arnold Schwarzenegger's signed into law of California Senate Bill 788, establishing licensure of professional clinical counselors in the state. Counselors are now licensed as master's degreed mental health professionals in all U.S. jurisdictions.

The bill becomes law on Janurary 1, 2010 and the Board of Behavioral Sciences then has the responsibility for developing the rules and regulations to implement the bill and it will gear up to accept LPCC applications.

Applications for grandparenting and reciprocity will be available through the Board of Behavioral Sciences on January 1, 2011. These requirements are posted now on CCCL’s website, caccl.org, under Licensure Requirements.

Applications for regular licensure will be available January 1, 2012 for those not eligible for grandparenting or reciprocity. These requirements are posted now on CCCL’s website, caccl.org, under Licensure Requirements.

The educational criteria seems to allow for national accreditation and state approval:

"A 48-semester-unit master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited or approved institution, which is counseling or psychotherapy in content."

I was surprised it was only a 48 credit degree. Many other states require 60 credit masters degree programs for licensure as a counselor.
