MLA, APA or Chicago/Turabian?

    Howdy folks!

As I'm going through the UoP "interview" process, I noticed my recruiter asked me about my knowledge of APA style. Obviously I know it rather well because my MS in Education used APA style, as do my political science courses. She made a remark that UoP only uses APA style. That brings up a question. I was under the impression that the style used was determined by the discipline, not the school. For example, when I was an undergrad, my history courses used Chicago/Turabian, my communication studies courses used APA, and my English courses used MLA.

So who determines which style is used? Is it the school or the discipline... or both?

I was told that at CSUDH the APA style is used exclusively - the reason being is that all theses go through the same department for review (the library dept in this case).

it seems that the SA schools use the harvard method (i've not made an exhausteive search)

All my courses at Salve Regina (business, management) have asked for MLA. I was just looking at taking some courses at College of Financial Planning and the syllabus I reviewed all specified MLA.

I think that it varies by subject. Way back when I completed the HUX MA (I wrote my essays in cuneiform on mud bricks) we always used MLA. Apparently they are still using it. It seems to be pretty much the standard in the humanities disciplines.

I can't speak for all schools, but I can speak for my little community college in WI. (www.lco.edu).

We made the decision to use APA. Although at larger schools the choice varied by discipline, we felt that since so many of our students need developmental writing, that it was in our student's best interest to learn one style well.

Once you learn the concept of proper documentation, it's easy to switch formats. I have all three (APA, MLA, Chicago) on my bookshelf.

It seems that Ashford University exclusively uses APA style for all of their papers. I am in my thirteenth and final class there and APA has been the requested style for all of them.
