CPA Requirements by State (Florida)

I know beckercpa.com has a similar directory, but I'm looking for something a little more in depth.

I'd like to become a CPA in the state of Florida some day. I plan on attending Troy and pursuing a BSBA after I get my CLEP and DSST exams out of the way, and then an MS or MBA from Florida Atlantic University.

FAU's business programs are AACSB, but Troy's are ACBSP. I'm not sure if this makes a difference. I know that some states seem to require AACSB credits or a degree in order to become a CPA. I was wondering if that was the case in Florida.

Also, I plan on CLEPing out of the following business related courses: microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial accounting I, principles of management, principles of marketing, intro to business law, and principles of finance.

Even with all of those exams, I should still have 42 business related graded credits, most of which are upper division. Does Florida's board of accountancy recognize CLEP exams in place of some business courses?

The best thing to do is simply go to the Florida Board of Accountancy's web site and check.

Be careful CLEPing out of business courses if you plan on becoming a CPA. Some states will not allow this.

If I had to choose between Troy and FAU, it would be FAU do to its AACSB accreditation.

 

Oh yeah, one more thing. Becker is probably the most well-known CPA prep course but in my opinion, it's not the best. You will be much better prepared with either the Roger Phillip course or Yaeger course. The problem with Becker is that the instructors drone on while showing Powerpoint slides on the screen. Yawn! The two courses I recommended do a much better job of teaching the material. You can watch demo videos from each site.

I only plan on attending Troy for the undergrad degree. I definitely plan on attending an AACSB school for the masters.

 

That combination is probably fine, although I still recommend checking your state's BOA web site.

FL requires 6 hours in business law. Be careful here because most states don't.

FAU is probably the safest choice because they're in FL.

 

You might also want to look at UWF's accountancy programs. Also AACSB. They charge in state tuition even if you are out of state.

I seem to remember somewhere that Florida doesn't allow any CLEPed courses to be used towards CPA requirements, but I don't remember where I read that.

I never considered USF until now. I actually live closer to UCF, but they don't offer much of anything through DL yet. Plus, most of UCF's on-campus graduate programs don't even offer night courses and they require a higher GMAT score than USF (550+).

I contacted the Florida Board of Accountancy a couple of days ago and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

 

They don't and you can only use 3 credits from internships.

Those were the first sites that I came across. They make no mention of AACSB.

 

Because it's not required. They do make mention of CLEP, however.

You can't use it for your accounting courses.

I was referring to University of West Florida, not University of South Florida (though they might have something there too.)
