Math Narcolepsy?

    Another thread got me thinking...

During every standardized test, I fall asleep during the math portion. Even if I'm well rested and the topic is easy. I got a 99 on my ASVAB but was woken up a few times by the proctor (oops). I got an okay score on the verbal section of my PSAT, but slept straight through the math parts. Same situation with my ACT and my GED (which I slept almost all the way through).

Looking back, even recently, it is nearly impossible for me to stay awake during algebra and I have no idea why. It's almost like a weird psychophysiologic reaction, but there's no reason for me to react to math.

Sooo... I'm starting to wonder if I have narcolepsy. It happens at other times as well, but with math tests I'm definitely going to fall asleep. But usually I'm just down for a few seconds to a couple of minutes and then *BING* I'm wide awake again.

    You don't think it's a conditioned response?

I'm really not sure :D I'm kind of puzzled about it.

I think you were part of a psychology experiment and as a participant were told to forget everything about the experiment except the conditioned or Pavolvian response. Normally, I cringe when WikiPedia is cited as a source but since the concept is so well known there is little chance of being led astray.

Hey! Joking aside, if you think you have a condition like narcolepsy then you shouldn't be talking to us, you should be talking to your doctor. If it's true then you'll really want to know. I don't want you wandering off the road into your own private Idaho. Get it checked out.

I will talk to my NP about it, but it is so embarrassing! I don't drive right now, but I have gotten sleepy while driving before. There's probably a pretty good chance that I am just that I find math just that boring (something that a therapist suggested to me before).

When driving the same route often enough I have experienced "how did I get here" syndrome. I can never be sure if I was awake with no current memory or if my memory allowed me to navigate while asleep. All I know is if I am drowsy I tend to steer towards the edge of the road but if I experience "how did I get here" syndrome my driving seems perfect.

If you suffer from narcolepsy, see a doctor immediately.

Yes, chances are they will prescribe amphetamine or some derivative. :D

How dare you speak ill of the bringer of truth?!

One of the more popular medications for narcolepsy is called Provigil. It is, as you suggested, a type of stimulant medication.

well, I have the reverse condition :) I fall asleep if the topic is not math ;)

On a serious not, do check with a medical expert, it's best not to lose valuable time in standardized test asleep. Every second can impact your score.

All the best for all future math tests!
