    Hello all...

Not that anyone cares :) but I am posting my new years resolution in order to make the resolution public - this way I will be more motivated to achieve my goal...

I am the Senior Food Service Sergeant in my National Guard unit. If anyone has served in the military, you might have heard the saying, "Never trust a skinny cook." Well, based on my weight - you can trust me.:D

I am seriously considering attending Warrant Officer's School in 2010. (Need to Phinish the Ph.D. first). However, in order to be successful, I need to get myself into shape - not just to pass the Army APFT, but to excel at it.

With that in mind - here is the resolution:

By December 31, 2009, I will be able to accomplish the following:

    • 57 push-ups in 2 minutes
    • 62 sit-ups in 2 minutes
    • 15:18 - 2 mile run
    • Weigh 197 pounds

By accomplishing these goals, I will have a score of 270 out of 300 on the Army APFT, and I won't have to submit to the extremely unscientific U.S. Army body fat percentage calculation (ratio of neck circumference to abdominal circumference).

I started my workout routine today - and weighed in at 244 pounds. In order to make this goal, I need to lose 1 pound a week.

I plan to post updates at the end of each month - again this is more to help me. Thanks for your understanding, and may everyone have a Happy New Year!

    Shawn

How is that PhD coming? What significant milestone had you recently accomplished? Was it that you passed your comps and got your dissertation proposal approved? Or did you finish the writing phase and schedule a dissertation defense?

My proposal was approved in November - I am currently slogging through some electronic files preparing the mailing for former soldiers to participate in the research study (qualitative interview - why did you leave the National Guard after deployment to Iraq).

Mailing should go out first week of January - then it's going to be a busy 9 months or so...

Hi Shawn - Your resolution is a great one. Not only because it will make you healthier, and not only because it will make you feel better, but also because it is realistic. Those are totally achievable goals. Best of luck.

Here is what I did to lose 45 pounds of fat between January and November, 2008. I'm not calling it a health food plan, the only way or the best plan. It's just what I did.

    1. Count calories. Count calories consumed, count calories burned. An internet search should reveal the calorie content of most foods, as well as food labels and some books.

    2. Determine calories to be consumed. Pick desired weight in pounds, multiply by ten. I picked 185 pounds so I was to consume 1850 calories. If you have an active lifestyle or job you may have to adjust this number up.

    3. Any calories consumed in addition must be burned off by exercise. Again, an internet search can reveal the calories burned by many activities. I prefer walking with a pack as it burns calories and is relaxing (doesn't seem to affect recovery from weightlifting workouts).

    4. Focus on getting adequate protein (0.33 to 0.5 grams per pound bodyweight daily). I never counted grams carb or fat but leaned towards a low fat diet simply to get more to eat.

    5. Eat plenty of raw vegetables and some fruit. These are good sources of vitamins and fiber and usually have few calories.

    6. Engage in high intensity training / weightlifting 2-3 times per week (internet search HIT weightlifting). Using muscle is the best way to retain and build muscle. You might want to focus on calisthenics 1-2 days per week and HIT 1-2 days to meet your goals.

I'm not claiming to be an expert. I am simply sharing an outline of what I did to drop 45 pounds of fat between January and November, 2008.

    Good luck.

Are you going to take the basic Warrant Officers course at Fort McCoy? I was an E-7 when I went. You will need to be in shape especially for 0500 PT. Great course, but very hectic and fast pace. Forget about your current rank you will just be another trainee to the cadre.

I plan to do the "weekend WOCS" course: Book learning via DL, 5 drills at RTI at Fort McCoy, and then 2 weeks at Camp Atterbury in Indiana. I'm currently an E7 - but that will mean diddly squat.

A soldier in my unit recently completed the course and he said that you need to be in GOOD physical shape - other than that any good NCO should do fine. He stressed GOOD physical shape.

Take it slow, and best wishes. As Prof. Leland Milton Goldblatt says, middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle

My lady friend is getting a little heavy. I don't know if I should dump her or just encourage her to diet/exercise or go back on drugs. .

It was obvious that the size of my girl friend's chest is in direct proportion to the size of Prof. Leland Milton Goldblatt's net worth.

Good Luck Shawn. Exercising and working on your doctorate is tough. As far as my running, I average 45-47 miles per week and it is just part of my day. I have been running for 28 years, so it is like breathing to me. You will do well. I am 43 and 65 inches tall. I have to watch my weight too. :)

You have a million options, one is Blogger.com. Go here:

Sign in using your GMail account info or Google login (if you have that). Otherwise create a new account. Then, follow the step by step directions. It's pretty simple.
