    Hi,

I said this last year, but just a reminder. If you are looking for a pet for Christmas, please consider the local pound or one of the hundreds of pet rescues. Also, you can consider adopting an adult dog, or even an elderly dog or cat looking to live out the last few years of their life in a decent home. If you are looking for a particular breed, do an internet search, there are hundreds of rescues that specialize in certain breeds. I like to adopt adult dogs because they are usually house trained already, and you don't have all the nipping of shoes and other things. But whatever you decide, please consider adopting a dog or cat that needs a home before buying one out of your local mall or breeder. The local pound also carries, goats, pigs, rabbits, snakes, turtles, ducks, etc.

    Happy Holidays!!!

    Abner :)

P.S. if you adopt a large snake, do not house it together with a small or chicken or duck. :)

Thanks for the excellent reminder, Abner.

What animal(s) do you have? (And other folks here, too. There may be a Master's thesis here: matching pet preference to academic (or online) behaviors and actions.)

We have a probably-about-two-year-old Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier named Ceilidh, pronounced, of course, 'kaylee."

Same here - three cats, all female, strictly indoors

The ten year old brown tabby was picked up as a kitten for about $10 from the local pet store in New Mexico the weekend before we got married. Her companion kitty was picked up from the same store a few months later and passed on due some medical issues earlier this year. Shortly after that happened, we began making trips to the pound and eventually came home with a bobtailed white cat that was about a year old. Kitty #3 (an orange tabby)came from one of the local strays who decided to use our recyling bin as a place to give birth to a litter over the summer. We got her before the mom relocated her to the local storm drain.

I have an American Johnson Bulldog and a French Bulldog. I also have two fish ponds that house goldfish and Koi. I love all animals basically, dogs, cats, snakes, fish, etc.

I love all animals basically, dogs, cats, snakes, fish, etc. I once adopted a Boxer that only had a couple of months to live. We managed his pain (terminal cancer) with medication, and he had a home and dog bed to live out the rest of his life. Although this is heartbreaking, I did receive comfort knowing he had a nice home the last days of his life.

I have an English Mastiff, awesome dog. It's very comforting to know that when I'm at work, someone bent on hurting my family has to first get past the state-of-the-art wireless alarm system, to then be confronted by an extremely protective 220-pound dog.

Oh, and then there's my wife, who is a very good shot with her .38 Special revolver. :D

I have an 8 lb. Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix named Max :) We adopted him from a couple moving out of state. He's lazy and sweet and spends his entire day cuddling on the couch. I highly recommend adopting an adult animal instead of a puppy- we got him at 2 yrs old and he was already housetrained, knew commands, etc.

I rescued a Beagal from the ASPCA several years ago. He would have cost me $300 but I got him for free. Smokey is the best pet I could ever ask for.

I have two cats, Cleo and Caesar. Cleo was the kitten of a stray my sister took in. Caesar was from the Isle of Wight Humane Society. Great cats... both of them!

An 8-pound ChiPom and a 220-pound mastiff. What a pair. Bring 'em to the next DegreeInfo social; I'd love to see a picture of them together.

I have 6 rescued cats and everyone is just wonderful. Pumpkin was almost dead when we took him in from a neighbor who did want him or want to manage his problems. His breed is a Turkish Van, he is now much better ,finally fatten up and I have had him for 5 years he's about 10 or 11 now.
Sophie was at our local no kill shelter for 10 months and she is a Maine Coon tortie, very intelligent and very greatful to have a home. She had cage fright very bad and it took sometime for her to recover. Very smart and very anger that she was in that cage for almost a year. She was 5 when we got her she is now 8.
Evangeline, Annebelle, and Flurry Knox were all adopted on the same day about 3 years ago. Evangeline is a beautiful red tabby long haired. Talks and talks and talks all day long. She now 4 ,she was a 1year when I adopted her. She was at another local no kill for 2 months. Annebelle is this tiny short haired black and white girl who had almost lost her eye while in the shelter. It got scratched then a major infection set in ,after ready her medical records and what she had been through for 2 whole months I said box her up. Still not sure if we could save her eye. She recover but has a gray haze on her lense.
Flurry a complete handful and still is. He was 4 1/2 months when we got him he is now 3. He was only in the shelter for a short time but he was injuring his face trying to get out of his cage. My little girl bent down and said to him " don't worry someway somehow I will get you out of here". Well needless too say he got adopted that day also.
Last to join our family was Olivia a black and white long haired who was found at a local soccer field and came to us from a local shelter. Kind of hard to place because she was afraid of people and such. Probably born and raised outdoors. She finally comes out when people are around after 2 years. Very shy, she is approx 3 years old.

All of these furry creatures have enriched our lives. Please do go to your local shelter and adopt your next pet, because someones life is depending on it.

    Have a Happy Holiday!

Cats are cool. Several years ago, I came out of the gym and I was loading my gym bag in the trunk of my car. I saw a little gray and white cat eating out of a dumpster that was near my car. I went over and said "hi kitty". He then followed me and jumped into my car. I tried to take him out figuring he lived nearby, but every time I would try to take him out he would start crying, VERY LOUDLY!!!!!! I was embarrased because people were looking at me probably thinking "Why is that horrible bastard trying to dump his cat in a parking lot?" I darned not try to take him out of my car again because I was very embarrased. I figured I would take him home, fed him and make some posters with a phone number for a lost cat. I put them all around the parking lot where I found him, and nobody ever claimed him. He lived with my wife and I for about 11 years. His name was Rutherford. Great cat.

And that concludes my true story,

    Great post, Abner!

I rescued a black lab/basenji mix from the local pound three years ago. She is hands down the best dog I've ever had. I've never been partial to labs, but she leaned against me through her cage and then whined when I walked away. Clever girl!

I think some of his.....calling cards I've had to pick up, have weighed more than 8 pounds. :D

    This is NOT my dog, but it's a pretty good indicator of how big the breed is;
