That discussion about Engineering Technology registration and certification got me thinking about something.

A while back I got A+ Certification and then a Novell CNE. Back then it was a pretty valuable thing to have since it was the CNE was the most comprehensive certification in the IT industry. And then there came the MCSE, and then the Cisco CCNE and so on and so forth.

Now, it seems everyone has a training program for IT professionals. And everyone has something to hang on their wall. As for my Novell CNE, its a neat souvenir I guess.

It seems to me that the most knowledgeable IT folks are people who do not necessarily have much formal training but just know stuff from tinkering with stuff.

    So let me ask,

    1) What kind of Certifications and registrations and so on do you have?

    2) What is the most valuable certification out there now?

    I have: MCP+Internet, MCSE NT 4.0, MCSA W2K, Network+, A+, Server+, Security+, and Project+, i-Net+.

The most valuable certs was the combo of MCSE and Network+. Now, I would say one of the security related certs like CCSP certification (Cisco Certified Security Professional).

I will be the first to say that I don't know what I am talking about.

My son is interested in computers as a career. We are Canadian but my family and I are living in Haiphong, Vietnam where I work.

My son is graduating from high school in June and, because he is young and wants to, he will be taking an American B.A. online and by challenge exams.

I don't want to neglect the computer side. Are there any useful certification courses that he can take online? If so, where?

If, at some point, I send him to nearby Philippines, will certification courses there be valued back in the US/Canada market? How easy are they to possibly apply to an American B.A.

I also would appreciate an answer to anything else that you think I should have asked.

    Thanks,

    Sidney

The Microsoft and Cisco certifications still have good value. Some others in demand are Security+, CISSP, CCNA, PMP, CWNA among others.

The problem with these credentials is that they take long time and effort to get and by the time you get them are almost useless. It took me 3 years to get my MCSE that now has been replaced by the MCTIP.

Totally online? There is Brainbench. It used to be free but now they charge a small fee for examinations. See http://www.brainbench.com/ . While its not as prestigious as other forms of IT testing (Microsoft or Comptia for example), its not unheard of for people putting such online certification on their resume.

A moderately intelligent person can self-study for the CompTIA examinations, especially the CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ certifications. The Microsoft Certifications can be completed with self-study as well if you have a few spare computers at home to use as you study the material. With these certifications your son could apply to Charles Sturt University in Australia (distance education) and transfer in those certifications towards a degree... a masters degree if I recall various threads on this forum. Another possibility is Charter Oak State College or Excelsior College as one or both accept quite a few transfer credits from various industry certifications.
