Several years ago I got hold of a very old edition of "Family Tree Maker". The other day I saw a news story about genealogy and how there are numerous online resources available for discovering your family's history. Have any of you done anything in this regard? I looked at the 2008 edition of FTM and am probably going to end up buying it, but am curious how it may work with the online resources at genealogy.com and ancestry.com.

As long as the program that you are using will export files as a GEDCOM, which is the most common format for genealogy files, you should be OK. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) maintains the largest genealogical databases in the world. You can access free resources at www.familysearch.org, which is a good site along with ancestry.com.

The church also operates many regional family history centers staffed by volunteers who will help you with your genealogy for free. If you look up the church in the phone book, it should show a listing for the local family history center. The great majority of the people who use the family history centers are not members of the LDS Church.
