I think it's fantastic; as long as the teachers are volunteers, undergo proper training including periodic refresher training/qualification, I see this as no different than arming airline pilots. Both planes and schools are high on terrorist (and just plain crazy people) target lists, so it makes perfect sense to me.

You can't put a police officer in every school, but you can at least give the teachers a chance to defend themselves and their students when a whacko or terrorist comes in shooting.

    Ask Suzanna Gratia Hupp about being a helpless victim in Texas;

And what's to keep a teacher from shooting his/her students when he/she becomes frustrated one day?

The same reason why 99.9999999% of teachers right now don't stab their students with a pair of scissors when they become frustrated; self-control and a respect for human life from good people.

If someone could wave a magic wand and eliminate every single firearm on the face of the planet instantly, people will still kill. We've been offing each other since long before the advent of firearms, and we'd be doing it long after they all disappeared.

If all my guns vanished tomorrow, I'd go down to Sears and buy myself the biggest, baddest chainsaw they had and keep it next to my bed. If someone broke into my house and threatened me and my family, the noise and mess would be infinitely worse, but the end result would be the same as if I shot them.

    • I am totally against allowing teachers to protect themselves by owning guns, regardless of what the 2nd amendment of the constitution says. Screw the constitution and screw the forefathers who wrote it. I'm also totally against authorizing Americans to own guns to protect themselves. Granted, our forefathers carried guns, but look at what they used them for: They used their guns to cause a revolt against a lawfully established government (the British government)!!!

Only the police should be allowed to carry guns. If you need protection from an impending attack, simply find a policeman to protect you. You can trust me because I'm from the government.

Which humans can be trusted with firearms and why did the the forefathers of the United States constitution create the 2nd amendment? ;)

We could also draft all schoolchildren into school-based junior ROTC regiments. Then, they could help save their beloved teachers from terrorists.

Junior ROTC are not issued operable weapons, Ted.

Issued? It's just a matter of time before some kid grabs Mr. Smith's gun when his guard is down...and he will drop his guard....eventually he'll become distracted by all that teaching.

The plan is for teachers who volunteer to carry concealed firearms. In over 20 years of carrying a concealed firearm, I have yet for anyone to notice that I am carrying.

So, the obvious question is; do you truly, honestly believe that high school students will suddenly start randomly attacking their teachers on the off chance they might have a firearm if this plan goes into effect? Why take the very poor odds of them maybe having a gun, when they could attack police officers who they know for certain have guns? And what exactly would be the motivation for these high school kids to suddenly start attacking their teachers?

As Suzanna Gratia Hupp so eloquently put it, you don't see crazed gunmen attacking shooting competitions or police conventions. They want easy targets, and by creating "gun free" zones, we've supplied target lists to every whack job in the country...."Come and kill us, because we're unarmed".

Awwww, darn! That needs to change, so they can defend themselves and their beloved teachers from terrorists.

You mean Mr. Smith isn't going to have his AK-47 drawn while teaching? :D

I've always been in favor of teachers being able to carry weapons, ever since I was a student. I always said they should be able to carry stun-guns. I've seen waaaaay too many fights in school, and legally (in Virginia) all we're supposed to do is say "stop". Now, I can tell you from experience telling to kids to stop fighting isn't going to have any effect. Now if a weapon were introduced and the kids were forced to stop, there would be a different outcome. Gun carrying terrorists don't happen everyday in schools, but fighting between students does.

Hormones? Rage? Drugs? Girls? Matt is better suited than I to attest to erratic teen behavior.

Matt, maybe we can just bring back the ruler before jumping to stun guns? You think there is a parent on the planet who is going to allow their child to be tasered? This can of worms is unimaginable, and the legal ramifications are through the roof.

    I would favor arming teachers.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by six

I am all for a puny 60 year old granny using her gun to stop a 180 pound 18 year old student from raping a small 13 year girl inside a school. Unfortunately, no one was around to help this girl.

Let's look at that logically; if hormones, rage, drugs, or girls are going to cause students to randomly attack teachers, how does allowing teachers to carry alter the scenario? If teachers are going to be attacked anyway, why not allow them to defend themselves effectively?

And I don't know about you Jennifer, but I would think twice about going after someone who may have a .38 revolver under their shirt.

Bruce, of course you and I would think twice- we are adults, and this is your field. You are around adults who carry weapons and have excellent judgment and self control in the heat of danger, anxiety, and excitement. (I'm around teachers all day, and I wouldn't give some of them my car keys)

An average Joe carrying a weapon, sure I support that right 100%..but a teacher? I'm still on the "no" side, especially after Matt's enthusiasm. Are we going to send our teachers to police academy so they can learn when it is appropriate to/not to shoot? Are they are backed by their union when they use deadly force? Will their union power trump the law? What about other weapons for self-defense for those who feel less comfortable carrying a gun- but still want protection? Knives? Tasers? Throwing stars? I am being absolutely serious. Where is the line and who gets to draw it? The principle? LOL
What about giving all the teachers pepper spray for a year and we can see how it goes? :)
