Personally speaking, count me as somewhat surprised and rather disappointed. I like AMU/APUS primarily for its focus on niche markets and comparatively reasonable tuition rates. But after looking at comparable institutions that are more identifiable with ticker symbols (i.e. APOL, CPLA, WPO, LAUR, DV) than mascots, I predict AMU/APUS will unfortunately offer less value once shareholders are provided input.

I am equally surprised by this announcement. The tuition is reasonable and the programmes are certainly well-structured and address unique areas of study. I also appreciate the resistance to flood the market with advertising thereby building a stronger reputation in the marketplace and with employers.

How big is the IPO? If the same people will still control a majority of shares afterward, then I don't see how this could significantly affect policy.

Not likely. AMU will still cater to a primarily military market and so their tuition will still hover around $250/credit or wherever the military TAP (tuition assistance plan) sets benefits. The only way that their tuition levels will rise to the same level as the other for-profits is if they make a major shift in marketing strategy and go for people in the corporate world with tuition reimbursement plans. Simple as that.
