I recently purchased a Rubik's cube and it has been consuming my time. I had one in the 80's and was pretty good with it. Is this better or worst then DL classes???

Well, that depends on which one you'd rather put on your resume. ;)

    Rubiks cube?

If you can figure the thing out then delete everything on your resume and just put " Master of Rubik's cube".

I'll bet less people have that " Mastered " than have a Doctoral degree.

You will get a job in no time.

I recently read that in the Rubik's world, the 'holy grail' is to solve it in under ten seconds. I note the current record, set at last year's championship, is 10.48 seconds.

What I cannot conceive is how anyone can solve it blindfolded at all, much less in the world record time of 23.06 seconds. Obviously you have to look at it before the blindfold goes on. What a strange talent.

Hi Randell - I don't know if I'm doing you a favor or not but if you go to
www.youtube.com and punch rubicks cube into the search engine you'll get a whole bunch of video clips related to how to solve the cube.
Good luck and try to get some sleep.

Huh. The problem is that Google is using this to decide how to label images, but the players aren't trying to give the best description, they're trying to give one that the other, unknown player is most likely to choose.

There's an economics paper in there somewhere!

In the 80's my best time was 23 seconds and averaged 38 seconds. Currently I am holding at about a minute and have got down to 44 seconds. Not bad for two weeks practice. I would not have the time to dedicate to memorizing 150 possible combinations and sequences of moves (average of 8 moves per combination) to solve every combination. At that is just to solve the last layer in about 3-5 seconds. I have heard that this will get you to the new "standard" of 20 seconds or under consistantly.

    After all...I have a life...right...right?

Hi Randell - From your first post I surmised that you were struggling to solve the cube. In reality you are remarkably proficient (much more so than I). My apologies for guessing that you were an amateur.

I am stuggling - to break 40 seconds consistantly. Thanks for the tip, it can really help.

Impressive. The only thing I ever broke in 40 seconds related to a Rubik's cube was the cube I broke in frustration because I never could solve it

That's nothing Kizmet. This morning, while I was having coffee, I solved the cube in 10 seconds! :)

No worries, Abner. It's also funny that ever since this thread started I've continued to find these silly stories/videos. The cube must have had a resurgence in popularity. As for myself, I've never been good at it. See you later.

I noticed, at a game store yesterday, there is now a "Mini Rubik" -- which is 2 x 2. When it gets down to 1 x 1, I'll join the fray.
