I've made my doctoral decision. I'm going through the University of Pretoria. Click here for my blog entry on why.

Excellent choice Steve. I know you have been looking for a doctoral program for quite some time. I think you will be very pleased with your decision.

Hi Steve - I know it's not an easy program but that will just make it so much better when you've finished. Best of luck. I hope you'll be able to tell us something about "the Pretoria experience" as you progress.

    Steve:

I read your blog (thanks for the link). Your rationale is as simple and elegant as I'm sure all your doctoral writing will be. Congratulations on your decision!

wow... congratulations! I was looking at the Pretoria website, but I couldn't find their rates, fees or distance learning section. I am interested in the PhD in Computer Science.

It's not a distance learning program as such. It's a research program, which means that I'm working under the supervision of one of their faculty in an independent study fashion just as anyone else in the program is. The difference is that we're cooperating via email and Skype rather than through visits to campus. My supervisor is satisfied that I'll have access to comparable academic resources here in Washington as I would in Pretoria, so that's not a problem.

As far as fees, I believe a doctoral research program there is one where one pays the program fee in the beginning, then a smaller re-registration fee every year thereafter. If I'm right, then it seems like 16,000 South African rands (currently 2,136.81 USD) for the first year, then 3,600 ZAR (480.78 USD) for each year thereafter. (That's including the additional levy for non-SADC international students.) As you can see from their fees page, though, it's not really easy to tell for sure:

    Good luck,
