"Among the most useful things to do to make that happen, the research says, is to select rich parents happy in their marriages and get good grades in high school. Working part-time in college (but only on campus) or doing lots of student activities also helps."

Great, and how about starting in little bit worse conditions - whether it is possible to become sucessful? How do you think - is there still a chance to be "self-made man"?

There never was such a thing as a "self-made man" in the first place. Those who claim to be "self-made men" conveniently forget the help received on the way.

As the saying goes, we're born cold, wet, naked and hungry - and then it gets worse.

Agreed, in spades. I have a cousin that loves to regale people with tales about clawing his way up from Community College, eeking out a BA in finance at a local commuter college, and getting his JD from Univ of Michigan the "hard way".

He also conveniently forgets the sacrifices, second jobs, long held dreams put off, and debt load he saddled my aunt and uncle with so he wouldn't have to work while in school. As soon as he passed the bar, he essentially forgot they existed.

I probably belong to the second group (described in 2nd paragraph), but never a "self-made-man". The simple successes I've experienced could be so great for a person of my background (worse conditions...). [My Life (partly)

I don't know about that "self made man" business But everything that I know and accomplished was the result of hard work, stupidy, and some luck. I say stupidy under the context of "I never listened when I had the opportunity and as a result I made my life alot more complicated ."
