Good for BG... but why don't we see more ppl doing that sort of thing? The prison's are filled with capable bodies, instead of pumping iron they could be out there cleaning the environment and actually contributing to the betterment of society!

Considering the cost of each prisoner, they really could earn their stay there.. don't ya think? *g*

Right now I'm sentenced, er, stationed in Georgia at Robins AFB. In the mornings, the sight of "Parole/Prisoner" buses parked at the side of some of the local roads isn't that uncommon. These folks are out picking up trash, chopping down weeds, etc. and doing precisely what Bluemason suggested. Something redeeming about being here - I think this is an outstanding idea.

As a currently serving member of the military (much earlier in my career – rank does have it’s privileges), I could be detailed for weeks to mow grass, paint buildings, pick up trash, and whatever else needed to be done on a military base. I'm not really sure how this constitutes "cruel and unusual punishment" for prisoners.

Now as response to your original title, “Do you really want to hurt me?” in relation to Boy George, my answer is a resounding “YES!”. I endured the music in the 80’s, and to this day I can’t quite get it out of my head……..“Karma Chameleon”! (The horror!).

In WA, these tasks are given to convicted DUI offenders - this makes sense when you consider that part of the punishment is to drive home what they lose when they lose their driving privileges.

As for other criminals, I think most Puget Sound commuters would feel unsettled by having hardcore violent felons working within a few yards of them. I'm quite happy to have those folks making license plates out on McNeill Island, thank you.
