    Hi,
I am going to be at St. Andrews for 5 days and Edinburgh for about 5 as well. Just looking for some hotel, restaurant and pub leads while there.
I will be visiting my alma mater, Queen Margaret University College as well!!!

    Thanks in advance.....John

If you are a Queen Margaret Alum, then I'm surprised you already don't know the pub scene. :)

When are you going? Now until the end of August is the time for the Fringe and Edinburgh festival. If you don't already have a place booked, it might be very difficult to find a hotel. The West End Hotel is one of my favorites. Very central, very traditional Scottish place. The small hotel bar is where the local Edinburgh old-timers meet on a Saturday night. Of course, the Caledonian is nice too if you got the $$$$.

As for pubs, I definitely recommend Finnegan's Wake. Usually there is live music. I can't remember the street name right now, but any local, bus driver, or police officer will know it. It's near the castle.

If you like more of a club atmosphere, then there is Espionage. It's got 4 or 5 different levels of bars in that place and is very popular with the university crowd. It's next to Finnegan's Wake.

Near Princes street there is a place called The Standing Order. It's in an old bank. They also have food that is pretty good. Also in that area is a bar called All Bar One. It's a nice place to hang out. I've hit every major bar while I was a student in Edinburgh, sometimes even in a single night. I can go on about pubs, but those should get you started.

As for other restaurants, depends on what your budget is. Since I was a student when I was there, I usually ate on the cheap. I did find some really good places however. I'll have to rack my brain to remember the names later.

Hmmm, you remembered the names of your favorite pubs, but you can seem to remember the names of where you ate -- typical student. ;)
