Cold reality - William G. Parrot

"A growing list of sites has come to represent new hallowed ground upon which our fellow citizens have suffered: Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Shanksville, Kabul, Fallujah and Baghdad accentuate the cold reality that we still live in a dangerous world and that, most certainly, freedom is not free. With all due respect, fly the flag, thank a veteran and count your blessings."

Since moving to Halifax earlier this year I have visited a number of local parks with my dogs and noted the poor preservation of numerous historical sites and/or structures dating to World War II. Seeing the crumbling concrete and wooden structures emphasizes the abandonment of the "Lest we forget" mindset towards our past and ultimately our future.

Good thread. Growing up in the military and currently serving in the military now, I will never forget about sacrifices that were made before my time. I hope everyone takes the time to remember the reason we have a day off.
