A while ago I was looking for programs in Religious Studies that were as I called it ‘faith neutral’. Well, I could not find one, SO, I’ve enrolled in AMU’s MA Ancient and Classical History, which is as close as I’m going to get to what I am looking for.

I’m thrilled with the quality of the program and so on.

I’m posting this because for my first classes term paper, I need to create some detailed maps, and I can’t find a good mapping program . Does anyone know of (a really cheap of free) program that could help me draw some historical maps?

Lots of them out there. Try:

    http://www.freegis.org/database/?cat=0

You can also download an evaluation copy of one of the big boys, ArcGIS at www.esri.com. There are also student versions available to purchase.

These programs might take a while to learn. What I would do is use Google Earth. You can use Google Earth's maps as a backdrop, and create your own labels, lines, and polygons using XML.

Oh Man, who knew there were so many! Thanks a bunch. I’m going to start off with Grass 6.0 and see what happens..
