IEE and IIE Royal chartered institutions formed new IET

The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Looks like this is a better approach than it was last couple of years.

A way to recognized professionals who are Engineers or Technologists and technicians but not necessary registered with EC UK.

The new post nominal designations are:

    TMIET

    MIET

    FIET

    Member - no post nominal.

What are the eligibility criteria for the different categories of membership?

    Member
Membership is open to everyone who values involvement with the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Members of the IEE who are not entitled to use post-nominals and Associate Members of the IIE who are not students or apprentices will transfer into this category.

    Entitlement to use MIET
All professional engineers and graduate professionals who are engaged in one of the many technology fields within the scope of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, or are established professionals with knowledge based on experience, are eligible to apply to use the letters MIET after their names. From 31 March 2006, all those registrable as CEng or IEng will be eligible to apply to use MIET. All those who are currently MIIE or MIEE will become MIET.

    Entitlement to use TMIET
All professional technicians who can demonstrate by their education and/or experience that they are professionally engaged in one of the many technology fields within the scope of the Institution of Engineering and Technology are eligible to apply to use the letters TMIET after their names. From 31 March 2006, those registrable as Engineering Technicians will be eligible to apply to use TMIET. Those with Foundation Degrees or the equivalent (Higher National Diplomas or Certificates) will also be eligible to apply to use TMIET.

    Fellow (FIET)
Fellowship recognises significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement and professionalism in areas relevant to the interests of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. All those who are currently FIIE or FIEE will become FIET.

    Honorary Fellow (HonFIET)
Honorary Fellows are distinguished by their work in engineering, and are those individuals who have either rendered services to the Institution of Engineering and Technology or whose association is of benefit to the Institution. All existing Honorary Fellows of the IIE and the IEE will become HonFIET.

    Student Members
Students are those who are undergoing a programme of study leading to qualifications that will eventually entitle them to apply to use post-nominal letters. Associate Members of the IIE who are either students or apprentices undergoing an educational programme of study will become Student Members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Student members of the IEE will also transfer into this category.
