I am using PERRLA APA software to format my papers and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It saves hours of writing time because the software automatically:
    • Alphabitizes end-of-paper references and
    • Puts the references in the correct format i.e. periodical vs. book vs. online source, etc...
    • Automatically places in-text references i.e. (Smith, 2004, p. 91).
If you have a question about why the PERRLA software is doing something a particular way, it will automatically tell you which APA rule it is following, along with the page number where you can find it in your APA book.

The bottom line: It is accurate and saves me loads of hours. Instead of concentrating on references, I can now concentrate on other important mechanics of writing. No more getting bogged down with APA rules, structure and format because the software does it all!!!!

I have used it for a month now and my evaluation is complete. It cost $24.99 and was well worth the money. Once you purchase it, you get to keep it for life, along with upgrades.

You can see the PERRLA APA webpage by clicking here. :)

Endnote? I didn't know there were other similar software programs out there. This is wonderful. It's almost like comparing the old card catologs in the library with online professional journals -- the two can't be compared!!!! Awesome!!!! :)

EndNote does everything you said, and on top of that , it creates databases of referenced authors and papers. You can cross-reference those databases if you wanna use the work of previously read authors in other papers (or by other users). It warns you when you insert an author twice, for instance. This program allows you to select as well the format. You can choose APA, but you have also MLA and hundred others.

I suppose your software does probably the same, but this is how this one works. You start a project, you select a few variables like format style, and so on, and EndNote opens a template for you in Word, where all the paper structure (title, discussion, conclusions, etc...) is already set up. You only have to write your text, include your referenced paper with just one click, and the software does everything else, the paper title, the index, the alphabetized reference work, the page numbers with your name, a detailed bibliography, etc... You can easily customize it to your own needs to include certain things and to exclude some others. Like yourself I find this software to be excellent, and a great time saver. One day not very far we will only need to think really hard about it, and with just one click the paper will be instantly written, referenced, and printed out.

I wasn´t aware ot perrla, so thanks for sharing. :)

Hummmmm, I don't know if PERRA does all that (I'm not fully familiar with all its functions yet), but if PERRA doesn't do all that, then I will have to purchase Endnote because the features that you described are absolutely invaluable for preventing duplicitive work. When I end up with three pages of references, it can get very confusing and it appears that Endnote might solve this problem.

I've used StyleEase (www.styleease.com) in the past and loved it. I'm going to be needing another APA formatting product soon (starting my PhD work soon) and will take a look at Endnote & PERRA.

They also provide a trial version. I can send you a copy of my digital manual if you want to browse through it.

    Trial version

One more thing, I didn´t explain myself properly. It doesn´t warn you when you insert the same author twice. After all it is pretty common that an author has many papers in the same subject. It actually warns you when you include the same paper twice, even if it was previously written in a different database.

Most people have no idea of all the features of a given software package. It can pay off to read the manual. ;)

Very true. I'm a big fan of PERRLA as well, but until I had to do a REALLY extensive thesis, I never bothered to learn half of the features.

I will say that as an everyday tool to bang out a research paper or assignment (implying that most people do this everyday...), I've been very happy with it. Great news about the addition of a reference storage database as well, since PERRLA gives lifetime updates.

I am in the market for an APA style formatting software. Right now, I am leaning toward Reference Point. (www.referencepointsoftware.com)

I have been doing a little research and have found the following comparison website.

    http://www.apastyle.info/template-list.shtml

Any comments about any of the reviewed software from posters here would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    What about OpenOffice?

Does anyone know of a free plugin for OpenOffice that would help with APA styling?

ScholarWord: Professional for Windows provides powerful tools and information to help you write your academic papers in compliance with either the MLA, APA, or Chicago/Turabian writing and documentation style.

    me again,

I followed this thread when it first came out and I have finally decided to breakdown and purchase APA PERRLA.

The PERRLA basic information site states the following:
