I just started browsing this forum and decided to register so I thought I would introduce myself.

I'm a 33 year old detective in Colorado. I've been in law enforcement for about 10 years now. I'm hoping to be promoted to sergeant within my police department in the next few months. I'm also considering a public administration phd which is why I found this forum. I'm sure I'll have questions as I weigh my options.

I have a BS in criminal justice from Metro State in Denver. I also have an MPA from CU-Denver. I attended a number of classes on campus but you can complete the program completely online through their Rocky Mountain MPA program. CU's Graduate School of Public Affairs has been rated high by US News and World Report so it's a viable option for those seeking a good public administration program that can be completed by distance learning. I took a number of classes online so hope I can contribute to discussions on MPA programs and online education in general. I'm looking forward to participating.

Dunno about this influx of cops on the board. Should I feel safe, or am I being watched :D. Seriously, welcome to the forum.

    Cheers,

Welcome Cumpa. You are in the right place for all your educational needs. When I first stumbled into this website, I did not realize the important role that it will play in my life. Now it is almost a part of my educational needs.

They didn't tell you that the Patriot Act has been extended to Australia? Just speak slowly and clearly when you're next to that lamp in your office.

    Excellent, an MPA grad!

I am seriously considering a MPA as my masters degree.

The program I have looked at the most is the program at UNC Pembroke (dirt cheap like 3 or 4K).

    UNCP Online MPA Program link

It is a 42 credit hour program but I'm not sure if its NASPAA accredited. How important is this?

My background is in IT but I haven't been out of college very long (only 2 years). I want to position myself to take a leadership/management position in the public sector and I think this is the best way to go about doing it.

My BA is in Business Administration so that makes it somewhat tempting to go for an MBA; however, I really believe that I would enjoy the public sector more (some people I know work at a Community College and they have some very nice jobs there).

Any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance and welcome aboard!

The UNC program looks like a good choice. As long as the school is respected in the area you want to work I don't think it matters too much. The price also sounds very appealing. The classes are very similar to what I had to take. Most program require some type of internship if you don't have experience in the public sector but that might be a good option for you to pursue some career options. Best of luck.
