I can not freaking believe it is only 10:30a.m. Today it’s going to be a really long day. :(

    I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… I hate Mondays… :(

But today is Tuesday… Nevermind!!!

  2. My pick is Tuesday

I always thought Tuesday was the worst day....

On Monday you can reminisce about the weekend.

On Wednesday you're halfway through the week.

On Thursday you can remind yourself that tomorrow is Friday.

On Friday...well, it's Friday and the weekend is starting.

But Tuesday? You're past the weekend and the next weekend is soooo far away....

    Cheers,
    Mark

. .. all of which brings to mind the words (and music) of the great American philosopher Jimmie Dodd, of The Mickey Mouse Club:

Today is Tuesday, you know what that means,
We're gonna have a special guest today
So get out the broom and sweep the place clean
And dust off the mat so the welcome can be seen.
Roll out the carpet, strike up the band,
And give out with a Hip, Hooray! (Hip, Hooray!)
Wiggle your ears like good Mouseketeers
We're gonna present a guest today
'Cause Tuesday is Guest Star Day!

    :D

So now I'm curious. Since the week is a purely-artificial construct, is the seven-day week an international standard, or are there places that do it differently?

  6. I've yet to hear about a culture (one that follows a calendar) do it differently.

What I do see are cultural differences, such as the traditional Islamic workweek being Saturday through Wednesday. (I guess they hate Saturdays!)

I found this reference about weeks of different lengths at http://webexhibits.org/calendars/week.html#date

"Do Weeks of Different Lengths Exist?
If you define a "week" as a 7-day period, obviously the answer is no. But if you define a "week" as a named interval that is greater than a day and smaller than a month, the answer is yes.

The ancient Egyptians used a 10-day "week", as did the French Revolutionary calendar (see French calendar).

The Maya calendar uses a 13 and a 20-day "week" (see Mayan calendar).

The Soviet Union used both a 5-day and a 6-day week. In 1929-30 the USSR gradually introduced a 5-day week. Every worker had one day off every week, but there was no fixed day of rest. On 1 September 1931 this was replaced by a 6-day week with a fixed day of rest, falling on the 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th, and 30th day of each month (1 March was used instead of the 30th day of February, and the last day of months with 31 days was considered an extra working day outside the normal 6-day week cycle). A return to the normal 7-day week was decreed on 26 June 1940.

Lithuanians used week of nine days before adopting Christianity."

    Interesting...

    Cheers,

Leave it to Dr. Bear to take a common workplace whine and make it something educational:)

Mondays are a common defect in most industrial nations. However, from years of experience with Government civilians, among that crowd it seems to strictly optional.

Speaking strictly as a Military worker performing the same job as these (much) higher paid individuals, GS types are bona-fide psychics. They know weeks ahead of time when they're going to be sick, and it's usually on a Monday........;)

Disclaimer: I've worked with some very dedicated, highly motivated civilians in past assignments. The crowd I'm currently with doesn't fall anywhere near that category.
