If anyone wants an intro to the life and thought of influential Kenyan philosopher Henry Odera Oruka, the most readily available source is the memorial volume published after his murder by a government death squad in 1995, "Sagacious Reasoning", edited by Graness and Kresse. Despite the circumstances of its publication, there is much here that is devastatingly funny along with much that is profound. His brilliant word coinages are worth the price of admission all on their own. This was a truly great man, whether in his explorations of the concept of sagacity, his pioneering work in environmental ethics, or his passionate commitment to human dignity and the rectification of names.

    Seasons Greetings, all!

"Can anything good (in Philosohy) come out of Africa, the East, and the Third World?" Thanks, UncleJ, for sharing a book that definitively answers the question in the affirmative.

"Sagacious Reasoning," indeed, is pure gold. Oruka's final book is a treasure trove of edible golden nuggets.

And co-author, Kai Kreesse, is a golden chronicler of African philosophy.

Sagacious Reasoning is a book that is a bit difficult to find. Those who are interested might first try Alibris.com. I just checked and they've got a few.
