I am truly saddened. Such a fine contribution to the world of distance learning, and now it is gone. The loss is immeasurable.

I echo Rich's sentiment. The grief is just to great to put into words. What shall we do to get over the loss?

    (Two seconds later....)

    OK ... I'm over it.

    reconstructing what has gone away

Yes, we are all saddened by its passing. But perhaps we can take back bearings in order to understand That Which Has Expired. Here is a call for speculation, if you're willing to indulge:

Who do you think is really Father Guido?

Note that Father G. doesn't confuse "it's" and "its."

Don't know -- don't care to speculate -- but that howling in the Internet-ether that can be sensed from here to the next galaxy ....

That's the howl of vapors jones-ing.

For those that still miss the MilitaryForums, here's a nostalgic fix for you.

"I hope that #@$%## who's in a comma, dies and his wife ends up blah-blah-blah."

"My institution of higher learning that is run out of my living room is better than Union."

"The glorious self accredited institution of blah-blah-blah blah-blah"

Great news! Thanks, Galanga, for sharing it.

What does one do when a dead internet forum actually expires?

    ROFLMBO!

What did our US military - a proud, noble and gallant force of good men and women - do to deserve a linkage, no matter how ephemeral, to such a dastardly internet blah-blah-spot as militaryforums.com? Or is/was the use of "military" in militaryforums.com a complete coincidence?

Good riddance, I say! (Or shall the dead resurrect the dead?)

    :D

Speaking as a card carrying member of the U.S. Military and one of many DL students in my unit, I can't think of a single one of us that ever gave that forum the time of day.

A couple of us joined this one, and the rest tend to "lurk" here. You probably won't be hearing any funeral dirges or see flags flying at half-staff if you happen to live near a military post/base.

    it was hijacked

Militaryforums.com was full of legitimate stuff (including the distance learning forum) until last spring when the trolls found it. I'm guessing that the domain registrant didn't expect there to be so much focused nastiness when he/she created it. So I think it's the trolls' fault.

I mean, really, when we see that a fellow with more doctoral degrees than limbs will view the horror of 9/11 as a profit-making opportunity, why wouldn't we expect to see duckmen like Father Guido viewing the educational needs of young soldiers thrust in harms way as an opportunity to post obscene messages about children?

As Galanga points out, trolls can wreck a previously sensible website.

What's needed to start the slide?

A little toleration, a little willingness to be deceived, a little consenting to smooth pretense instead of home truths.

    Can it be stopped?

Can it be reversed once it starts?

    I honestly don't know.

But Churchill was right--how much harder the toil for every day's delay.

    Vigilance, comrades, vigilance.

Of course it can. This forum is a shining example of that.

Remember "Libertarian Larry" (and the aliases he kept adopting) and the havok he wrought for a couple of days before the moderators stepped in? It also led to some productive changes and additional volunteers in the way this forum is moderated.

Your end quote, sir, says it all. Vigilance.

I guess "Scar" will have to continue to be sick, twisted, and perverse elsewhere. :D

Well, he's moaning on Crabby forum about how he'll miss it.
Funny, the sickos and neo-you-know-whats piously bemoan excesses on aed and then lament militaryforum's temporary absence--when it's obvious that they are the same people, or rather Untermenschen, posting on aed, Crabb, and MF. The current Crabb trick is to mumble about high standards and go dish their worse stuff on aed and MF. Anyone dumb enough to believe that subterfuge deserves to be fooled by it.

Remember, comrades, the problem is not confined to trollism, lies, and disinformation in other fora. Be vigilant! There are wreckers and hooligans about!

It sees that “Scar’s” whining was so hard core in the other-sort-of-board that the moderator had to edit it. (I know I broke my promise not to visit but this was too juicy to miss.) As always, Tío Janko, you are 100% right. They are everywhere, and can sneak in anytime. I say let them. Let’s fight fire with water, hate with understanding, and foolishness with raison d'être. Then we will not only have won, but also be better people because of it.

    Happy Holidays Everyone!!!

Exactly. They also talk high ideals then are the worst trangressors themselves. The whole site is nothing but anti-degreeinfo with no posting of any value at all. They show their true colors to all.

As do trolls here, temporarily feigning civility amid a cascade of rot and blather.
Kinda Popular Front, if you get my drift.

It is so sad when someone has nothing better to do with his or her time than bashing others I almost feel sorry for them.

"Lo mejor que hizo Dios fue un día después de otro…"
God's greatest creation was one day after another…

We live to fight another day...

I'm sure he/it will. It's not that expensive. I'm sure its expiration is just an oversight... probably because of the holidays, if I had to guess.

Of course there's always the possibility that the site was costing too much to operate... in which case, maybe they won't renew the domain after all...

...but I wouldn't count on it.

I sure do wish I could convince everyone that it's just a huge waste of time to even visit such places. I haven't in I dunno how long... and I don't feel like I'm missing a darned thing. You'd be amazed how easy it is to get along without the other fora... and, if you're a frequent subject there, like I am, how much lower your blood pressure, and how much happier life will be.

[sigh] Oh, well. People just can't help themselves, I guess.

It's just an opinion... and maybe I haven't thought it through very well, so I reserve the right to retract it if, after more careful consideration, I decide it was foolish, but: I sometimes think that the now-defunct DegreeBoard's policy of not allowing discussion about other fora might actually have been kinda' smart. But, again, I haven't really thought that through very well yet...

...nor might I ever, now that I think about it. ;)
