LONDON - Virgin Galactic, the British company created by entrepreneur Richard Branson to send tourists into space, and New Mexico announced an agreement Tuesday for the state to build a $225 million spaceport. Virgin Galactic also revealed that up to 38,000 people from 126 countries have paid a deposit for a seat... The spaceport, to be located some 25 miles south of the town of Truth or Consequences, will be constructed 90 percent underground, with just the runway and supporting structures above ground... Space Law and Ralph Edwards' evil plot There IS a reasonable amount of "Space Law" out there, too. One of my favorite scenes from "Aliens" is where the salvors are cutting open the capsule and discover that segourni Weaver is inside and still alive. You hear one worker mutter, "She's alive. There goes our salvage." Not actually true, but it's a great line. Now that the T or C dude, Ralph Edwards, has gone on to his reward, I hope they change the name back to Hot Springs.
Now that Ralph Edwards has gone to that Great Game Show in the Sky, I wonder if there is any movement in Truth or Consequences to change their name back to Hot Springs?
This has ALWAYS been a divisive issue in T or C. There's actually a fairly new city just north of T or C called Elephant Butte. (You can GUESS what the LOCALS call it.) Anyway, they didn't just annex themselves into T or C, which would have made better sense, at least in part because they didn't like the NAME.
Shows what I know. I didn't realise that the name was a TV gimmick. I figured it went back to cowboy times/el tiempo de vaquero. Carthage must be destroyed.
I thought the same thing. Tumbleweeds blowin'. A grim-faced loner slowly rides into the town's one dusty street. Townspeople hustle their kids indoors. The man slowly climbs off his horse, adjusts his gun belt, and we hear his boots clompin' and spurs jinglin' on the wooden sidewalk as he pushes through the swinging doors of the saloon with a scowl... Truth or Consequences. Right up there with Tombstone. Or maybe I'm confusing it with a early Clint Eastwood movie.
If I recall the story correctly, Edwards promised, on his show, to make an annual pilgrimage to whichever town or city would change its name to Truth or Consequences. Hot Springs (in a fit of municipal frivolity or councilar inebreation) did so. Edwards kept his promise right up to the end, too, visiting once a year. If you've never visited T or C, all I can say is, the trip wasn't exactly a reward in itself! The town park is named Ralph Edwards Park.
Actually a radio gimmick, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Truth or Consequences program in 1950. Edwards promised to broadcast from there every May, and I believe he did, as long as the program lasted.
