South Florida under the gun....

  1. Right now, as of this writing, my former home in Boca Raton is getting hit with at least 100 mph winds. Last year, we took gusts of about 80 mph that did widespread damage to the neighborhood, but were child's play compared to what is happening right now.

I hope and pray all my friends and former neighbors from that area are safe and sound today.... either hunkered down and shuttered up, or more preferably in some other part of the nation away from the action.

Good news is that it is moving fast, and will be out of the area by late afternoon..... Last year Frances hovered overhead for nearly 24 hours, and that sustained battering probably made it worse than it otherwise would have been - 60 mph winds for 24 hours puts a lot of strain on trees, poles, structures, etc., maybe as much as 100 mph winds for a few hours?

Anyway, please join me in my concern for beautiful South Florida - a paradise at all other times of the year except hurricane season.

That increases the right-side winds by about the amount of the forward motion of the storm. And it usually means higher winds for the interior whereas a slower storm would wear down a bit before reaching the interior.

    Hurricanes just bite.

They called some guy in Key West that is originally from the local area. He said he was probably going to move back. The hurricane's had taken the charm out of living in Key West....

I hear that..... Last year's (2004) season where we evacuated three times (probably none of them essential, but we were scared) took the joy out of living in South Florida for me too... That's why I'm not there anymore, and seeing my old neighborhood getting hit with winds in excess of 100 mph right now on radar is making me glad I got out while the getting was good - home intact, sold for double what we paid for it, and high tailed it to the backwoods/backwater area I live in now. It is boring here, but we don't get any 100 mph winds - ever.

Yeah, but WV can have some horrible flash floods in the ravines. Watch where you put your house.

It can be boring here too, only the occasional tornado to worry about...
