I acquired the habit of using "whilst" whilst participating in six months' worth of Law Tutor On Line sessions. It's an affectation; there's a little pouser in most of us, I guess!
I'm beginning to get worried . . . I used "perforce" at least once in the last essay I wrote ;-) Angela (pretentious, moi?)
ROFLMAO! I, perchance, forsooth, will wager a quart of frothin' ale, to anyone who can, verily, show us one or more occasions when one cannot use "while" in place of the much-maligned but noble word, "whilst." This challenge, egads, does not apply to anyone who is known to be a member of the dastardly cohorts on those other un-wonderful entity-loving, mill-cavorting fora. Thanks.
'Tis not folly to use "whilst" but once in a fortnight if such is your wile, but perchance 'tis wise to use "while" if such shall suffice. Kit
I'm one of the worst at it, you know. And it's rather (there's an example right there, overuse of the word "rather") incongruous (two dollar word, yet another example) living in a small backwater community amongst (see what I mean?) such earthy types [as you can see, yet another example of the contrast I'm forever making between my own exalted intellectual status and those amongst whom (hoo boy!) I live]. Whew; I've got it bad (semicolon yet another example of the sickness). LF
The challenge being, if thou abide will'st, To find a case where one can but use whilst. That instance being not all that sublime: In such a couplet, "while" ... just ... does not rhyme. As for the offered quart of ale a-head, I'll take a can of Sprite in prize's stead.
I hereby take back most of the nasty things that I've thought about QTJ! (Since I don't recall ever saying any nasty things about QTJ.)
