Hello everyone. I have started a tutoring service and I would like to see if anyone here is interested in a few openings I have avilable. Everything is done online. I am looking for an economics, business, statistics tutors. If you come on board, I would send you the assignments that need to be worked out and the directions on how to do so then the student has 48 hours to interact with you to learn from the solutions. I am getting many assignments and do not have enough tutors to cover the load. If you are interested please send me an email to: [email protected] with your resume and a phone number I can reach you at to speak to you about this. I will be able to explain things further if your interested.

The only reason I am posting this here is because of the wounderful people on this board who are educated and well mannored people. I love this board dearly and if I can help some of you make a little extra money on the side and help me with the load of assignments I get I think it would be benificial for both of us.

If I have posted this and it is not a suitable place to post this please accept my deepest aplogies and ask me to remove it and I will. I am not attending to spam or break forum rules in any way.

Thanks again and hope to hear from a few of you!

OK before anyone says this I just read what I wrote and I can see all of my spelling errors etc. I tried to go back and edit it but it will not allow me. :(

I need to learn to put my posts in word before posting it.

That, or you could just get a tutor. ;)

But seriously, does your service have a web site yet? Can you tell us a little more about it, such as what level the students are, whether it's an online service or an in-person gig, etc.?

    Funny :)

I purchased the domain name www.gethomeworkhelp.com. I have nothing there at this time. I promote the services by flyers at local colleges and universities. Everything will be college level work. What basically happens is someone calls and needs help with an assignment they email it to me and write what they are having problems with. I then forward it to the tutor in that field who will look it over and work out the problems and type in notes as a teacher would do to explain the assignment to them just in more depth. Then the students have an opportunity to email replies for clarification, more help for 48 hours on a follow up.

I am not a tutor myself as I am just about to enter the MBA program at Texas A&M -Commerce in Jan. :) 100% On-Line and AACSB. But I am a business man and put this together and have been getting actually a lot of leads. A lot of it is Math, some writing assignments, Economics, and then some other subjects from time to time.

Most of the students are just lost that use our service. And need someone to help them with their specific assignment, by doing it and actually showing and teaching them step by step how it was done. For extra money I allow the student to have a tutoring session over the phone with the tutor if the tutor is OK with this.

There are many ways this is working out right now. I really do not have a solid business plan or model because everything changes. But I am getting somewhere and will put something together soon. I need the website done, but do not know what to put there yet :) Any ideas?

Some thoughts; take 'em or leave 'em

So it's email based, and the tutors can just as easily be in the same town or in Katmandu, okay.

Yes, ideally you'd be focused on promoting your service rather than supplying it.

How do you handle payments? Do the students pay the tutors directly, or do you have a payment system aspect to this as well?

One of your competitors is the (inaptly named) Degrees For You service. Perhaps checking them out would help?

Same with SMARTHINKING (although I'm not sure whether those who use that service are supposed to think about smar or hink smartly).

If I were setting up this sort of network, I would use a model like that of eMove's Moving Helpers network or the way that Amazon lets people sell books on their site. In other words:
    • Let tutors set their own prices, but require them to get paid through you (which means set up a merchant account) so you can take a set fee and/or percentage.
    • Give students a list from which to choose based on criteria like discipline and location; whether they prefer email, instant message, phone, or in person tutoring; and rating.
    • Let students rate tutors and provide comments.
You'll need a web developer to set it up, but once done it should be easy to administer.

Right now it is email based only.

Right now what I do is ask the tutor to give me a quoteon a per assignment or task basis and then I mark it up 30% roughly. I send out an invoice through paypal for payment and once the student pays the tutor will perform the service. When the service is complete the tutor will receive their quote amount they gave me through paypal.

I like your ideas about the website unfortuantly this is a small operation as I do nto have much money to throw into this at this time. This is just a way to make a little extra money and help out some students that are in the same shoes I am in and have been in before.

I am open to any and all suggestions from you guys. Thanks for your feedback. Those sites are great. I wish I had money to make a site like that. I like the movers network one you posted that is a nice site as are the other 2.

    Hope this helps you some.

Re: Some thoughts; take 'em or leave 'em

Personally I found hinking was very difficult to do smartly. I managed it in a rather messy way for a while, then realised that simply thinking about smar was far easier.

A recent Financial Times study showed that far more potential employers prefer somebody who thinks about smar well than somebody who hinks in a non-smart (or as the report put it 'decidedly shambolic') way.

I have not removed the thread but I would like to ask JoePan to re-read the Terms and Policies of the forum (you know, those rules you agreed to follow when you became a member). They explicitly state that advertisements are not allowed on this forum. Good luck with your business but this is not a job search board.

Although in the past a very limited number of positions have been posted, but all of those, as I recall, related to distance learning.

I think that a tutoring service is a great idea.

But please be careful that your tutors don't end up doing students' homework for them.

Even if you have the best of intentions, some of your clients will probably try to exploit you.

If students sent me math-type problems that they were having trouble with, I'd be more comfortable sending them tips on where they might be going wrong and about things to remain mindful of, rather than just sending them worked problems complete with solutions. I'd want to guide the student towards finding the solution for his or her self.

If the assignment consisted of essay questions, I would be more comfortable reading and critiquing the work, professor style, so that the student could rewrite a better version, rather than actually writing the essay for them.

Billy I agree with you. I see that there are many lazy students so I do turn a lot of assignments away because I can tell if they want to learn or are just looking for an easy way out. I let them know we are here to help learn not to help pass their class. But thank you for the encouragment on my business plan. Hope something works out.
