I’ve spoken before of the internship as a potential roadblock for psychology doctoral students and I recently came across this article some may find interesting. There were 3,117 applicants this year of which somewhere between 223 and 334 were unable to secure an internship.

From this same article: On average, half to two-thirds of unmatched students go on to find an internship through the APPIC Clearinghouse; the remainder must reapply the next year.

I wonder how SCUPS Psy.D. and Ph.D. students/grads locate their internships. Would they be able to use this service even though their degrees are unaccredited?

Right off hand I didn't know the answer to your question about whether SCUPs students can use APPIC. I have no contact with unapproved programs since the program I'm with accepts only APA candidates. I nosed around the APPIC website and it looks as though those from unapproved programs are eligble. SCUPs students may circumvent the internship by way of a provision where some states permit supervised experience in lieu of an intership.

Based on my own meager experience with SCUPS I have a guess as to how a segment of their student population solves this problem.

For years SCUPS has been advertising its Doctoral programs in the professional newsletters of various disciplines. They routinely run an ad in the NASW News . Many people who enroll in the SCUPS doctoral program are already working professionals in the mental health field. They simply use their own work sites as internship sites.
    Just a guess.

Interesting guess. When I worked at a mental health agency and was considering working on a doctorate in psychology, I checked into internship where I worked.

I would have had to quit my position to become an APA intern and I would have lost my salary and only received a stipend.

    SCUPS intern/practicums for PSYD

Hello all. Just wanted to share on this topic. I have a friend who is working on the Psy D program with SCUPS. He works with the State in the mental health field. He will be doing a 500 hour supervised practicum next year. I asked Tony if he was going to complete the practicum where he works. He said he could not, that the university informed him that for licensure he could not do the "internship/practicum" where he was employed. The university strongly was opposed to that idea. He will be completing his practicum at another state psychiatric hospital using vacation leave and educational leave and wp leave when the prior is exhausted.
