We often hear about how organized religion is a farce, manipulates people, uses people, abuses people, and the like.

As most on here know, my sister and her family and my mother lost their home due to Hurricane Katrina.

I just got off the phone with my sister. Her brother-in-law's church give them an $1100 check tonight and took measurements to buy them all new clothes!

Additionally, another church in the community that heard of my family's plight has an empty parsonage as their minister has built his own house.

My family will be allowed to live in that parsonage for 90 days, rent free and all utiliites paid. Additionally, they are going to furnish it and buy kitchen untensils and cookware!

My own congregation has given them nearly $800.

Organized religion is like everything else, some good, some bad. This is an example of the good!

    Indeed! :)

Now if we could just get organized religion to stop trying to run the country.

One of the most touching things I've seen concerning the Katrina disaster was when I saw some refugees being housed in a Texas church social hall. Many church members opened up their own homes to the victims, taking in whole families who had nothing.

Religion can bring out both the best and worst in people, but I think the best comes out far more often than the worst.

Somewhere out there is a Jefferson quote on organized religion that should offend most of you.

I am in hopes most of us would be offended only if we choose to be. Neither Jefferson nor his writings control my emotions or feelings or thoughts.

Never did think much of Jefferson or Franklin, at least their personal lives and beliefs. Washington's my man. He was actually--if you can believe it--a principled slave owner.

He was his own trinity. :) Jefferson the idealist, Jefferson the man and Jefferson the President.
