Worst baseball team ever?

Many people, including Mr. Hollingsworth, the author of the book "The Best and Worst Baseball Teams of All Time" pick the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics, who won 36 games and lost 117, for a 23% winning percentage. But those Golden Eagles from Crookston would certainly be a candidate with their less-than-3% average.

 

'62 Mets look like '27 Yankees next to this team.The top pitcher had ERA of 9.07. Staff gave up 2 hits per inning and opposing hitters batted over .400.

These guys couldn't beat St. Regis. Sad really. Should not compete at D-2 level.

I vote that school should lose accredidation status.

 

The KC Royals this year. Boy, it's not easy being a fan. Such abject poverty of good play. They are a breath-taking 8 1/2 games behind the next worst team in the entire league; they are over 40 games out of first place in their division.

If MLB doesn't come up with some reasonable salary cap like the NFL, they'll continue the slide towards NHL-like irrelevancy.

It's not fun being a small market MLB fan these days.

 

Less than 3%? They did actually win 2 games out of 38, which means they won 5.26315% of their games!

 

As a lifelong Cardinal fan, I'd like to nominated the 1909 - present Chicago Cubs.

I love rubbing it in.

I do respect the players though. At least they were out there trying.

It seems to me that the "worst team ever" does have to be a credible baseball team. So I agree with gkilion,

In the "modern" era most would say the '62 Mets (40-120), but I would have to go with the 2003 Tigers, not the worst record, but take Young out of the lineup and "man-oh-man" you have one really bad team.

And that coming from a Rangers fan.

 

Slightly off topic....

But how about the worst players union and owners group.

I nominate the NHL. They go on strike for a year and subsequently lose their television contract. ESPN finds they have better ratings with POKER!!!!!!

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot....

2 of 25 would be 8% of their games, now, wouldn't it? Lots better than a lousy 3%!

You've got to love a team that had Eddie Gaedel, Bobo Holloman, and Pete Gray, each unique in his own way.

 

Off-topic, but wouldn't it be interesting if American baseball worked like European football (soccer) leagues. Relegate the worst teams in each division each year and promote the best teams up.

Of course after a couple straight disastrous years my poor KC Royals would probably have settled to AA by now under such a system.
