This a request to our fearless moderator to remove all the threads about Katrina. There's too much stuff that is untoward on too many of the threads--not necessarily TOS violations (or I'd have reported them) but stuff that just doesn't reflect very well on degreeinfo. Posters, if you think I'm talking about your posts, I probably am.

At this point some one will holler censorship. And they will be correct.

What I would propose to replace the various Katrina threads would be a new Katrina relief thread with links to reputable relief agencies, etc.

I agree 100%. Those threads should be removed.

All threads, with the exception of one concerned with donating to the relief efforts, have been closed.

I've seen more than my share of tragedy, but what's happening in the Gulf Coast is beyond imagination. I'm simply not going to allow anyone to politicize it here.

  4. Though I understand your motives in closing the threads on Katrina, I have to respectfully disagree about the discussion on the politics of the issue.

The tragedy itself is obviously the most important thing on people's minds right now, and rightfully so. Rescuing and helping those in desperate need is critical - that's where my "understanding" of your closure of the "political" threads comes in.

However, where I disagree is that, in the grand scheme of things, it is precisely the underlying politics that is the critical element here in order to prevent these type of events from recurring, or at least with the awful consequences that this one revealed. Consequences that are the direct result of neglect, poor leadership, and a "head in the sand" mentality on the part of the Republican elite who are running this country. Once the dust settles, the bodies have been counted, and as many people helped as can be helped this issue will re-emerge, and God help us, will bring down this evil administration and replace it with one that truly cares about the welfare of all Americans, and our integrity in the world at large.

I could not agree more with this.

There is a time and place for such but not in light of devastating, heart-wrenching human misery, suffering, and tragedy.

I don't want to be the one who asks a poster "Have you no shame?"

Thanks to Uncle Janko and Bruce for common sense and decency.

Well, I must agree with Carl on this one. This administration preaches a good sermon, but does not practice what is contained in the sermon. What should be contained in a civilized religion or "Tao" do you ask? Proper care for our elderly, our vets, those who are victims of natural disasters.

The "Tao" does not preach protection for the corporate world. Going back to the "Trickle down theory", this theory did not work. Obviously, the main intent of this theory was to trickle down wealth to the corporations, and they would create grandiose(or at least good) jobs. However, all the corporations trickled down wealth upwards to themselves. What did Reagen's great trickle down theory create? Part time jobs with no benefits! Lets give the Corporations some tax breaks, and they can save some money while they are at it! Thus the creation of a mandatory two income household!

What is my point, history repeats itself. And the people will finally see through the false morality of the extreme right!

Thank you for your time, this may seem off track, but I just wanted my say. If the mods choose to delete this, I completley understand.

    Thank you Bruce. Totally appropriate.

Since Gossett, Blahetka, and Chip have not been heard from for months, perhaps years, it seems you are the only moderator left here. What a job/responsibility. Thanks for doing it.

Let me reiterate my great respect for Carl, Gregg, and Abner. If they wish to make their political points about al-Rais Bush they can do so on threads devoted to that purpose (and so labeled, say, "Iraq: Money Pit Full of Sand") in the politics forum. Since they make their points with wit, style, and substance--even though I very definitely do not share their political views--I hope they do so. Best wishes to them and thanks to Bruce.

    Good call

Bruce, thanks for pulling the plug. But if we keep using this thread to put in our last two cents, I hope you close it too.

As long as there are dead bodies floating in the streets and in attics of New Orleans, I believe any discussion of politics surrounding the disaster is totally inappropriate.
