The school where my wife teaches, Vista College in Berkeley (regionally-accredited community college) is getting its own building for the first time next year, thanks to a bond issue a few years ago. On that occasion, they hope to announce a new name, since Vista apparently doesn't play well in focus groups with their target audiences: recent high school graduates, and mature students (30s and 40s) returning to school or starting higher education for the first time, roughly 1/4 African-American, 1/4 Hispanic, 1/4 Oriental, 1/4 Caucasian.

They'd probably like to have the word "Berkeley" in the title, both because it is classy, and to distance themselves from the other three colleges in the district, which are in other cities.

They're open to suggestions . . . in addition to what they believe is the obvious choice, either City College of Berkeley or Berkeley City College.

I like The City College at Berkeley.

Too bad CCHS didn't ask for input before their pathetic decision to go with Independence University. Dumb...Dumb...Dumb! :(

I hope they realize APUS is already taken! :D Also with the release of Windows Vista around the corner perhaps their old name is about to increase in value. Personally I think Vista College sounds pretty good.

Of course, Marina College of Berkeley sounds pretty good, too.

Vista College sounds just fine as is, but if they must change their name, I'd like to suggest New Horizons College of Berkeley.

janko: "Marina College of Berkeley sounds pretty good, too"

John: It has my support. Actually a Google search for "Marina College" found four or five people claiming a degree from such a place, but no such place . . . unless Princess Marina College, Arborfield, UK, is also known as just plain "Marina College."

"Berkeley City College" - because I'd go there!

But seriously, sometimes obvious is also classy, local, warm and fuzzy.

Why not go for a play on the colleges more historical name?

Pavilion College of Berkeley or Berkeley Pavilion College

(the orginal name of Vista was the Berkeley Learning Pavilion)

"How about "Vista College of Berkeley"?

    John:
Apparently in focus groups a lot of people thought it must be in Vista, California (a town of about 100,000), or that it had something to do with the federal VISTA organization (Volunteers In Service to America). But mostly I think it's "Hey, we're moving and a name change is a way of celebrating."

    John:
Gee, neither my wife nor I, nor the Vista dean she was talking to today, knew that. I rather like this, although I fear "Pavilion College" would quickly become one of the most misspelled college names in the US. (["pavillion" -pavilion] gets nearly a million hits on Google, while ["pavilion" -pavillion] gets 9 million. That's a lot of mistakes.)

Being an old-fashioned sort, I actually like "Berkeley Learning Pavilion" for the new name. But then I'm the one who was disappointed when The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company became just "the A & P". It could be one of the very few degree-granting institutiions that doesn't use the word college, university, institute, school, I guess a few others.

And makes sense in many ways too.

My brother and his wife lived at Berkeley Marina (on a boat) for many years. The coldest place in the Bay Area.

    People's Park College

    Berzerkeley College

Naked Guy College. For those who don't know The Naked Guy, here's a page that explains. It used to be legal to walk around Berkeley naked (until the conservatives moved in).

Gosh! Does Dr. Bear's wife have anything to do with this future Marina College?

It's an understandable error since pavilion derives from the French pavillon. Someone dropped an l along the way -- probably through a spelling mistake!

Well, the question then becomes: Shall we admit women to Naked Guy College? No, wait! Maybe the Board of Trustees of Naked Guy College can establish a co-ordinate division to be known as Naked Gal College! That's the ticket!

Well it has been 31 years since the name was used. The ironic part was I found that information on the Vista web site. After you asked about a new name for the college I thought It might be best to investigate the colleges history to come up with a name. In any case here is the link to that information.
