Did any of you see this on the news the other night? The National Park Service has issued a warning about human contact with bears on park trails. The NPS provided the following information to help the public become aware of signs if a bear visits a particular area and in addition things to do to deter bear attacks. The Park Service recommends that hikers and joggers, etc wear bells on their shoes. The noise is suppose to scare the bear away. Take along a can of pepper spray and if a bear comes near, spray it in the face and run. The Park Service stated that there are three types of bears to be aware of, the Black Bear, the Brown Bear and the Grizzly Bear. If you are walking on a path or trail and see droppings with seeds, maybe chewed grass and maybe a partial squirrel skin, then that is either a black bear or brown bear. If you see droppings that have partially digested skin, fabric, little bells and smells like pepper, then that is a grizzly bear.
That's been posted at the ranger station in Kings Canyon National Forest for at least 20 years. It is funny. PS: Q: What do you get if you cross a grizzly bear and a harp? A: A bear faced lyre!
