I don't think so. Maybe, but I don't think so. The neoconservative experiment isn't doing too well at the moment in Iraq and Iraq looked a lot more receptive to it than Iran now does. Remember, it was OUR puppet, the Shah, that the Islamic revolution unseated.

Also, Iran has, what, twice the population? And instead of nice, convenient flat deserts for armored vehicles, Iran has major mountain ranges.

True, there IS oil, a LOT of oil, but I am inclined to think that the oil companies would rather work with a stable government, however brutal, inhumane and repressive, than in a war zone. I suspect that Iraq taught them this, if nothing else.

Hunh. On a personal note, I trained with Arabs and Persians in the Navy. The Arabs were nice guys and remarkably similar to ourselves when it came to training and military attitudes. Funny; I'd forgotten that until now...

The PERSIANS, however, beat the socks off us every time. They were fanatics.

I'd say we have our eye on it. Syria is probably as much on the radar screen as Iran.

Especially since the U.S. is on the cusp of declaring our right to use nuclear weapons against any state in possession of WMD...

Well see, if you nuke them they can't come back and say annoying things like "But there weren't any WMD here", and then have it be proved.

    Syria

    w_parker,

I think Syria has a realistic potential for war. The whole area around Iraq is uneasy. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if Syria or Iran goes to war. It will still result in the whole region becoming a battle ground.

I've wondered this ever since the fall of the Soviet Union. If we can surmise that invading Cuba to get rid of Castro would be a popular move among the Cuban population in Florida, a key battleground state, why not go for it?

It's not like the U.S. has been shy to invade other Latin American countries. Noriega is still sitting in an American jail.
