From my perspective it seems that a large majority of mills target the Asian market. Even legitimately accredited ones, such as Columbia Southern who targets China, are tapping into the Asian market. The only answer I can come up with is the large population. Did I just answer my own question?
Are you accusing Columbia Southern of being a "legitimately accredited mill"? Hint: There is no such thing as a legitimately accredited mill. Columbia Southern is a legitimately accredited university.
Ted, I admit I worded that sentence a little funny. I am NOT accusing CSU of being a mill. I was trying to say that both mills and legitimately accredited institutions target Asia. No such thing as a legitimately accredited mill? No kiddin'.
Partially. I believe that the other aspect of the equation is that in many parts of Asia there is a big big big difference in regards to opportunity depending on whether you have/haven't a degree. Jack
I think that Asia is experiencing the world's most rapid economic growth right now. Many of these countries were among the world's poorest a generation ago, now some of them are approaching first world standards. Lots of people are moving upscale really fast. Local university systems aren't expanding fast enough to handle the exploding demand and there's a serious shortage of places. Hence the huge interest in DL.
Somewhere around here was an old thread on the International Association of Fake Universities, which accredits such fine schools as Howard Stern University and Latex University.
Asia does indeed have a large and growing population. And, yes, capitalists are always looking to expand into new markets.
Ted, I almost enrolled in Howard Stern University, but after discovering the FCC would censor the wording on my diploma I decided to enroll elsewhere. I appreciate everyone's responses. I just knew there had to be more to the story than "there's just a lot of people" because in the back of my mind I was thinking about what Bill brought up. Yes, there is a large population, but how many of them could afford it? The economic growth spurt definitely presents it's opportunities.
Big market. Extremely class-conscious. Values Western education. Thinks government approval matters. Huge market for, and producer of, counterfeit products. Seems attractive to both legitimate DL schools and their imitators.
