I'm really concerned about this bird flu. The United States is said to not have enough medicine to cover the population outbreak if it occurs.

Does anyone know what medicine will be need to protect yourself against this deadly flu?

Where can I get this medication?

A physician friend of mine points out that there is no cure for influenza. Once you have it, you treat the symptoms and take drugs designed to forestall secondary infections like pneumonia.

All you can do against the 'flu is get your annual flu vaccination when the public health people offer it.

Influenza kills thousands and thousands of Americans every year, BTW, even in less virulent years.

Flu vaccines are for specific strains. AFAIK, a vaccine for one strain may help to protect against a similar strain but there seems to be little agreement about that.

In the space of a few months it may have killed more people worldwide than have died thus far of AIDS in twenty-odd years.

Remember that AIDS is a syndrome and not a disease. People don't die from AIDS.

According to www.webMD.com about all you can do is GET THE SHOT.

Personally, I think washing one's hands frequently and avoiding crowds and standing too closely help, too, but I have ZERO evidence to back this up.

Once you get it, whiskey, lemon and honey in hot water doesn't help at all but will make you feel a little better for a little while.

WebMD also says that in an average year, 20,000 Americans die of the flu and its complications (mostly pneumonia, I guess).

    GET THE SHOT!

For those who are unable to complete this recipe, you can omit the lemon, omit the honey, omit the water and you will get, essentially, the same effect.

Beyond that, washing your hands is always a good thing. It helps to eliminate all manner of nasty little problems.

Also, the people who (typically) die of the flu are the elderly, infants and those who have compromised immune systems. Take sensible precautions but don't freak out.

I guess no one reads/listens to/ or watches the news?

Yes, Laser the Bird flu is very serious. It has only crossed over to humans in less than a hundred cases, but to those it did a whopping 50% death rate. They announced today some new vaccine was developed but whether this is effective and capable of thwarting a worldwide pandemic is still unknown. Just go to Church every Sunday and pray! What else can one do? Maybe cut the Defense budget and spend more research dollars on public health?

    Stay Well!

We also have several anti-viral medications that have shown effectiveness against the H5N1 strain "Avian Flu". Tamiflu is the key med, but is extremely limited within the Dept of Defense, and would be prioritized to deployed forces. There are other arrangements with the CDC and HHS.

    ACTUALLY< YOU CAN GET TAMAFLU...

    Scott,

Actually, you can already request Tamaflu from your doctor. I've met people who have and are stockpiling it, should the emergency use situation arise next flu season.

Of course, since there is no human form of bird flu, we don't know if it will prove effective. But it is a "best guess" preventative to do so out of season.

I heard a Homeland security worker comment on the possible effects of a pandemic. Invest in home entertainment stocks! People will strive avoid others for many months.
