Interesting model announced today on one of my regular news lists re-blended European model thesis only PhD and part coursework/ part thesis model US model.

The PhD Program in Economics and Management of the University of Padova provides the academic environment and the analytical tools needed by those who intend to specialize in the areas of business, economics and quantitative methods. The PhD is a 3 years program (coursework being offered in English language), which benefits of longstanding relationships with many high-quality institutions in Europe and United States. A cooperation program allows students enrolled in SDEM to visit the Department of Economics at York for periods of research and coursework, and, upon application, to be transferred to the Joint PhD Program in Economics awarded by the Universities of Padua and York.

Students can also apply to carry out research at MIT (USA) thanks to a cooperation program (Consortium Italia-MIT).
Admission is based on academic excellence and any student with at least 4 year university degree is strongly encouraged to apply. Grants from the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) and private institutions are provided to most of our students. Admissions are decided on the basis of a formal application (for deadline and detailed information see www.unipd.it/area/area-435.htm ) and a compulsory interview that will take place at November 2005.

Hi George - I've just gone three or four clicks deep into the links that you provided and I have to confess that I don't feel like I know more now than I did before I ventured into that website.
I don't know, for example, how this degree program differs from any other. I've seen nothing that even indicates that it can be done through DL. You've said that it's a sort of hybrid degree program but I haven't seen this delineated in any sort of precise manner. Some courses are required? Which courses? A dissertation is required? Really? How long? Is it a "project?" or is it a traditional dissertation? Where is this outlined? How, exactly, is this a hybrid? I don't doubt you but I also haven't found the answers to these basic questions. Can you help?

    Hi Jack,

I didn't really do any digging, just copied and pasted what was sent through. I have always been interested why the two models exist, and thought it may have been a blended approach.

    Cheers,

    George
