Empirical studies outlining reasons for non-traditional route?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any empirical studies that sought to determine the reasons why individuals pursued the non-traditional route as opposed to undertaking a traditional university program. I am particulary interested in data (if it exists) on reasons for choosing state licensed programs/ unaccredited programs as opposed to GAAP programs.
